i have had a few different comments on earlier posts but now im confused. guy on here tells me that if i am shooting 150s out of my .300wm and they are keyholeing it will only get worse with heavier bullets. everyone else tells me that i should go much heavier to solve this problem my rifle has a 1:10 twist rate with a 24 inch barrel any advise, comments, or fact would be appreciated i gotta get this problem fixed just not sure which direction to go in considering i am new to the long range game.

Re: 300 win mag key holes

Riddle me this....are you handloading or shooting factory ammo? If you are handloading as I suspect you are, exactly which bullet, powder and charge weight, case and primer are you using? And have you tried factory ammo to see if it also keyholes?

If you are shooting factory loaded ammo, have you tried a different brand of ammo?

Your 1:10 twist should be stabilizing the bullets just fine.

Re: 300 win mag key holes

i am getting keyholes with hornady 150 gmx factory loads im not currently hand loading i am getting occasional keyholes at 100 and it gets worse the farther out you go with it.

i have had a few .300wm shooters tell me that 150s in a 1:10 twist is like putting bad gas in a ferrari

Re: 300 win mag key holes

1-10 should be good from 150-220 grain bullets. Mine is shooting 200 and 208 fine with that twist rate. I would look at the crown or maybe have the whole action checked by a smith something is not right.

Re: 300 win mag key holes

well the only thing that i can say is that the normal hornady custom ammo in 150s shot pretty well as soon as i switched to the superformance round it fell apart the rifle is very new it has 100 rounds through it so far and has a break on it. it is a savage 110BA

Re: 300 win mag key holes

no i didnt take any pics of it but from what i have seen before in other targets with keyholes mine look very similar if not the same. the hole looks like a perfect circle 3/4 of the way around then it has a perfect small square coming off the bottom or rectangle

Re: 300 win mag key holes

Try some heavier bullets.... Get some 190 SMK or something of the sort and see what she does. I have experienced key holing in the 223 cant 243 caliber due to wrong bullets for the twist. The 1:10 should cover your 150's but you might have an anomaly that will only shoot heavier than 175's for an example.
