So here it is... after doing load development with no real pressure problems I'm all of a sudden having extraction problems. The load is 220 smk on top of 76.5 H1000 which chronos at 2850 out of a 24in 1/12 twist schneider. Fed 215 Primers WCC cases. Loaded up a 100 rounds of this crap on a single stage and drove about a 100 miles to shoot 3 rounds... all of which had to be tapped out with a cleaning rod. What a freakin' waste. The loaded rounds chamber and extract without issue. Any ideas other than the obvious??

Thanks.

Re: 300 Win Mag stuck cases

the Sierra manual lists 75.5gr of H1000 as the max for the 220 SMK....

that said i've gone to 77.0 (26in factory Remington r5 1:10 twist barrel) and still did not get the velocity i wanted so i dropped it down to a charge that had a unreal ES & SD and learned to work with the lower velocity.

but even at 77.0 i did not have any issues with extraction.

how did you prep your brass? how hard was it to seat your rounds on the charged cases? what kind of dies are you using? whats your OAL?

COAL 3.475 The last bit of load developement I used cases that I just bumped the shoulder back on. The ones I had probs with today were full length resized and trimmed. Could case lube be doing anything to cause this? I don't think there is any excessive neck tension. No crimp obviously. Just seems odd that all of a sudden I'm having problems.

The WCC brass is a military brass, which is thicker than all other commercial brass. The added thickness decreases the internal volume, which increases pressure. So, your over max charge is even more over max using this brass. You have to compare the components you are using to the components the manuals are using (most use Win brass, which has the largest case capacity), and adjust your load accordingly. I would pull those bullets and start over. You should be a grain or two less than book max for your actual max with this brass. Also, pick a method of sizing your cases, and do it to all of them. Also, my neck sized load is slightly different than my FL sized load on my 300WM.

Re: 300 Win Mag stuck cases

I was going to ask the same thing about case volume. If I were to run my Win. load (78 gr/208 Amax)in my Federal/Nosler brass (76.2 gr) I'd have real trouble, since I was getting sticky bolt at 76.8 gr.

This is where I'd look too. Measure some of that fired brass and find one of your neck sized cases that chambers smoothly. Compare notes.

This is where my brass starts to show signs of sticking. I have a Redding body die and have never had to get the Willis die, but chamber/dies tolerances might be at play.

ALSO! Check for head separation. I've had cases stick because the brass just above the belt was thinned enough to stretch the dia. AS WELL as push the head out to the bolt face. This caused a VERY tight bolt lift and I wouldn't have caught it except one left the *faintest* line around the case above the belt. I check EVERY case, EVERY firing with a bent paper clip now. God did not gives us two eyes so we would have a spare.

Re: 300 Win Mag stuck cases

Thanks for all the great info. 96 rnds worth of bullets I need to pull... can't wait to start that job.

I was able to just bump the shoulder and not full length resize these once fired cases. They weren't originally fired in my rifle. As long as they chamber fine would it make sense not to full length resize to prolong the case life? Or do I need to full length size initially, trim, fire in my rifle, then neck size?

Thanks.

This is what I do. Haven't had a problem yet. If you don't have a bullet puller, I recommend the Hornady collet kit.
