I have a R700P in 300WM, and I have been having a hard time getting this thing to shoot. It is bedded in a McM A4, Jewell trigger, and still I have difficulty shooting down to 1/2 MOA. I have settled on 210 SMKs over 76g of H1000, since that combo gives me the best results of what I have tried, but I have only used those and 190 SMKs. The groups seem to pull high right, so I was wondering if I need to speed the bullets up to exit at 12 o'clock, or am I over thinking it?

How many rounds down the tube? Gunsmithing work done by you? Check the torques on the action screws. I tried the 210 grain SMK way back. Didn't have much luck with it. Found my new love with the 208 AMAX.

Sometimes factory barrels don't shoot 1/2 MOA. Hate to be the bearer of bad news. My 700P 300WM would do about .6 MOA at best.

As to hitting high right, have you adjusted low and left on the scope to get into the bull? Also different loads will have different POI so if you are zeroed for one load then another might hit high right. Just adjust the scope.

The distance you are shooting at will also create issues w/ magnums. If you can get a 1/2 MOA ish at 100, step it out to 200 or 300. I have found that a 3/4" group at 100 yds w/ my magnum nets me a 1" group at 300 yds. Can't tell you how many rounds I wasted at 100 looking for sub 1/2 MOA.

The concept is refereed to as "letting the bullet go to sleep".

Like Rob said 1/2 MOA is better than most make it sound here and not always that easy to achieve. How many rounds in your measurement group? If it's 3 that may not be very good. If it's 20 and you're just over .5, I'd be tickled.

My 300 shoots 208's and 210 JLK's very well from 100 yds out. Seating depth can be a prickly issue with secant ogive bullets. You may have to play with that to get them to shoot their best. My rifle seems to be somewhat particular with regard to neck tension also. If I wait to many rounds between annealings, my groups will open up.

I always do my load testing at 200yds. If it's 1/2moa there then it's usually a pretty good load. Seating depth can make a world of difference.

    Re: 300 Win Mag troubles

If it is the barrel, that is the least of my issues, as I probably will just end up rebarrelling the thing with a heavier aftermkt barrel. The gun has about 300 rds max thru it. The best group I got so far was 1/2 MOA at 200 yds, but I really wasn't too impressed with this. At 100 yds, it seems to perform worse, lending credibility to Doc's "sleep" theory. I try to headspace off the shoulder every time, except for virgin brass, which is about .02" bumped from the shoulder, making the case truly headspace off the belt. The case is pretty much swimming in there for the first firing.

The rifle was bedded and triggered by roscoe, and he did a great job; seamless work. I am starting to think that the barrel might be a bit crappy. I will continue to work on the loads and seating depths, and if I cannot get this thing to stop spraying, I am gonna sideline it for a while until I get a new barrel. It does hit 1000 yds fairly well though, so I am not going to give up on it just yet.
