300 WM - Anyone loading 168 AMAX + Varget?

I didn't find any data out there so I used Hodgedon's 168gr BTHP data with a different COAL. The COAL I used is 10 mils off the lands at 3.405". Looking at bullet dimensions this should create approximately the same amount of internal volume.

However, my hottest loads today were running 2740fps with 57.5gr Varget rather than the 2850-2900 fps I was predicting.

Is anyone loading this combination and how much powder have you found to be max?

I think I got my answer from another forum. Someone got the same results I got using a 168 grain bthp instead of the Amax so I think the COAL cals I did do match the internal volume of the bthp.

Varget is too fast of a powder for this size bullet. I'm glad I didn't keep loading it up until I got the velocities indicated on Hodgedon's website because I might have blown up my barrel in the process.

I don't understand why Hodgedon would put this information on its reloading page if it is wrong. I think I will send them a message and see if they will remove it before someone gets hurt.

I thought Varget was a .308 powder (which I use for 308) and that typical 300 WM powders are: RE22 (for sub 180 bullets), IMR4831, IMR4350, H1000 (least temp sensitive) for example. I use RE22 and IMR4350 for 300WM and have some H1000 to try.

I only use 3 powders for my .300WM

H-1000
Retumbo

I shoot 190,208,210,215 and 220gr. bullets.

I wouldnt use such a small bullet in the .300, its pointless when there are such way better bullets out there.

no,h4350,4831,rl19,rl22,h1000 are much better for what you are trying to accomplish.
