Anyone have any load data for the 300 Winchester Mag using the 208 A-Max and H1000 powder?

I'm shooting a TRG-42 with a 26 inch barrel...

Re: 300WM 208 A-Max H1000 Load Data?

I'm getting .4" at 100 yds with 71.7 H1000. No chrono speeds yet. Out of my Remington 700, 1:10, Hornady brass. I've tried to go hotter, but accuracy drops.

Re: 300WM 208 A-Max H1000 Load Data?

Just received my new Kreiger barreled Rem 700
RWS brass
208gr A-MAX
H-1000
With the bullet just touching the lands I have a COL of 3.452
I just began loading for a ladder test starting @ 71 gr with that COL and could just start to hear/feel the powder crushing in the case. With caution I moved upto 72 gr and same thing only a little more crushing. Then nervously I went to 73 gr, still even more crushing. I'm not comfortable going any higher. I've been loading .223,.308,.50 BMG, and different pistol cal. for years but nothing like this.
Can anyone steer me strait on this one?

Re: 300WM 208 A-Max H1000 Load Data?

Crushing isn't bad to a point. Are you getting any pressure signs? Have you calibrated your scale lately? I don't get into the powder in RWS brass until I have 75 gr in it. I think everybody is having the best luck with the Amax at 2850-2900. I check loads and seating depths until I get one that shoots where I point it everytime, then I chrono for my dope.

My load for MY GUN. Use your own discretion.

HORNADY Brass
OAL 3.610
H1000 76.9 grains = 3,000 FPS average (my node too)
.208 gr. AMAX HRNDY
Fed Match Mag primers

3 shot group @ 505 yards (I know shoot 5 but I only had three at this weight that day)

Thats awesome shooting!! I know guys that have a hard time grouping like that at 100 yards!

Re: 300WM 208 A-Max H1000 Load Data?

Trust me its not me its Hornady's .208 Amax all the way. My bone stock 300 Win Mag (Sendero) luvs those 208's. And I had almost zero wind that evening. Thanks fellas

Re: 300WM 208 A-Max H1000 Load Data?

It's funny how seating depth is soooooo critical with any hand loading.

My current load is going about 2800 and, I'm thinking about moving to a higher accuracy node.

26" 1:10 bbl
Win brass
CCI 250 primers
OAL is jammed .010 3.62" OAL
72.0gr H1000

I need to do more load work but, my first 5 shot group was .32" and I stopped. I'm going to print some groups this weekend to do more research.

Re: 300WM 208 A-Max H1000 Load Data?

Shot my first 300WM out of my R700 XCR Tactical today (26" 1:10 twist), and tried various loads of RL22 and H1000 with 208AMAXs. The best load was 76.0, seated to 3.62". I only had 3shots but they were all touching

This was out of Winchester Case with Fed LR Mag Primers. It does give you a good thumping on the shoulder thats for sure.

I am going to stick with that charge, and play around with seating depth, I dont have the tools to measure my bore accurately, so going to play around with going out to probably 3.66 or so.

Re: 300WM 208 A-Max H1000 Load Data?

Yup agree on the wumping your shoulder will take . GET A BREAK for your 300 Win Mag. And watch your groups tighten up. Youl stop whatever fearful stuff your doing that messes up the shots. And you'll enjoy the 300 better and actually "see" your hits better in real time.

Yep... I wouldn't shoot mine much without one! As it is, the guys I shoot 308 with are jealous becuase their 308 kicks more than my 300wm.

Re: 300WM 208 A-Max H1000 Load Data?

One thing you can do about the recoil is to get a slipon limbsaver pad. THEY DO HELP!!! The bad thing about brakes is the noise..I have had a couple, am down to one now. Both were on hunting rifles. My load for a Model 70, 10 twist Pac-Nor super match 26" barrel with minimum chamber is:

WW cases,FL sized & shoulder bumped .002
Fed 215
75.5 H-1000
208 Amax
~2950 Fps.

Any increase in powder and pressure problems result, plus the velocity increase is minimal. Shoots sub MOA in my rifle..and reaches out there as others have stated.

Dibbs, did you chrono this load? The highest velocity I can get is 2902fps. with 76gr of H-1000 coming out of a 26" barrel. I see you said your getting 2950 with 75.5gr. Curious if my chrono is off.

Re: 300WM 208 A-Max H1000 Load Data?

I did run it across the chronograph, but it's been a while. The next time I shoot I'll run the loads across the Oehler and post back my results. I've used an Oehler and a chrony chronograph in the past, and the chrony has given some erroneous readings. I'll double check the velocities, and also post ES/SD.

Re: 300WM 208 A-Max H1000 Load Data?

Wow thats smokin for 75.5gr
This past Sat. I was running an avg. velocity of 2835 fps @ 75.5 gr. of H1000 stuffed in RWS brass with a COL of 3.452 out of a 26" tube
I'm 100% compressed @ 75.5gr still no pressure signs though.
My next test will be with some H4831SC we'll see if I can get the speeds up without the compressed loads.

Re: 300WM 208 A-Max H1000 Load Data?

UPDATE
I have settled in on my load for this powder/bullet combo and was very fortunate to finish with top score(which is something new for me :)) at a match this past weekend with it.

I have backed off to 76.8 gr of H-1000 from the prior 76.9 my "new" load is:

Hornady cases, neck sized only, ultra-sonicly cleaned after each use.
Fed 215
76.8 H-1000
208 Amax
3.608 OAL just into the lands
~2988 Fps.
It is compressed but not too bad as the brass is now fully fireformed.
I know not much different from last load :), but this one won for me. It cuts the wind like a YOSHI BLADE
