I just finished this for a customer from Western PA. What a nice day for a range trip, took some ammo to give her a test and what surpised me is with the 180's how well the Badger brake worked. I honostly shot .243's that kick harder. What a great brake! Gun shows promise too - 2nd group shooting junky Remington Corelock to test feed and function was .625. I don't reload for a 300WM yet - but will soon : )

Re: 300WM build complete!

NIce.
I'm looking to build a 300WM and can't decide on the barrel length.
I like them shorter, but don't want to sell the caliber short with a short barrel.
I'm thinking 24" would be about right for what I want to do. (800yrds)

The 300WM has a lot more ooomph than most people realise. You can cut it back quite a bit and *still* have a lot of power.

I have a 22" barrel on my 300. 208's are coming out at 2870 with H1000 powder. If it's underpowered, someone forgot to tell it. It hits with extreme authority well past 1000 yds. (I've shot it well past 2000 yds) and punches holes in 1/2" mild steel at 600. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot an elk out to 1000 yds with it.

If all you're ever going to shoot is 800 yds. 24 will be more than enough.

Here's another thought... what are you going to do with it? If you're just punching paper and steel you might consider a .260. I'm seriously considering this for myself. Same trajectory roughly, but half the recoil, half the powder, longer barrel life and components are cheaper.

If you need downrange energy the WM certainly will give you a lot more, but the .260 is no slouch and is good on deer to 600 yds. Just a thought.

Nice rifle! IIRC there was one of those "inch at at time" 300wm cut down tests and it showed very little loss from 22" to 24" Everyone thinks you need 26" and you don't.

Re: 300WM build complete!

After you play around with other bullets try the ol 220 smk with H1000! I just haven't found a more accurate pair in mine! Best group was a windless day mid summer 3 shots 3/4" at 500 yards. My barrel is a 32" straight contour broughton monster!

Re: 300WM build complete!

Thanks All,
The customer comes up tommorow to take her home - I think he is going to shoot the 208 A-max. I'll have him take some pics on how she is doing at the range.

I wasn't sure about the color when I started this build but now that it is on the rifle it sort of grows on you. I am building one for myself here later this spring and can't wait. The 300WM is one long range butt kicker.

Hope everyone had a Great New Years!
