What’s a good length barrel for 300win mag for ELR and barrel twist? Also what contours everyone using.

Hi,

What is "ELR" in your intended application?
Are you looking at shooting jacketed or mono projectiles?

Sincerely,
Theis
As far as application will be 1500+ and exploring pushing the limits with the caliber as far as I can. I’m a hobbyist. I’ll be shooting jacketed as of right now

A 28 inch barrel in the sendero type contour....In an 8 or 9 twist... At our elevation of over 5000ft the 10 twist handles the 215gr fine...JMO... Dave

I'm on my 3rd heavy contour barrel on my 300wm. Currently its a lhgt 1:9.5-8.75 tw.
I have good loads for both 230AT & 225ELDM. Both a bit over 2900fps. I've so far made hits to 2289yds with it.

I am shooting an AI with 27 in M24/M40 1-10 using Berger 215's right at 2840 FPS this is the slower node but shoots right at 1/3 MOA. Have shoot out to 2000+ yards. It just get hard to see splash much passed 2000 yards. May try the 300PRC on my next new barrel

Hi,

27" MTU with GT 9.5 to 8.5.....Have a LHGT ordered right now but it is for monolithics.

Sincerely,
Theis
Is LHGT something that does better with monos or have you tried it with jacketed also?

I see most are running 27”-28”... is there any benefit to running anything longer than that?

I’m running a 26” bull Criterion match barrel at I-10 twist. 225 ELD-Ms at 2860. Great at 1760 last time out. I’ll probably go with a faster twist on my next barrel.

I shoot a 28 inch 1-8 twist. I go as heavy as i can. I use to shoot the 225 eldms but im switching to the 230 smk. 300 win mag is awesome overall for long range. I usually get a freebore and single load get way more performance i did have the 225 eldms going 2980 but shot them comfy at 2929.

26” Bartlein Sendero Contour, 9 twist with the work done by Straight Jacket Armory.

Currently running Berger 220LRHT at 2948fps with RL26. Barrel only has 60rds so it may speed up a little.

Also have a 24” X-caliber, sendero contour, 9twist pre-fit that was running the same speeds with test loads as the 26” barrel above so I sent it to be chopped to somewhere around 20” and still have decent performance.

I’ve had several other 300win mags over the years with 24-26” barrels and would run 200-215gr bullets anywhere between 2900-3000 depending on powder.

What is the bc that you use on the 200? Ive found the seirra bcs claims are pretty low compared to actual number
Out to a mile .345-.350 lines up very well after that I use .335 and that lines up well to about 2000 yards. Normally, I do not shoot the 300wm further than 2000 yards as it is a waste of time as hit percentages drop drastically and the same things goes with ALL cartridge combinations. The 200gr MK is a good bullet and well balanced in the 300wm. Good muzzle velocity and good precision. Accuracy is up to the shooter.........

I only can shoot out to 1900 yard at my range. But the 197 smk did great so going to try the 230 smk. There new bullets are pretty nice great bc

Current barrel is a 1:10 twist, 27" straight taper to 1.00" at muzzle. Shooting 225 ELD-M's at 2900fps out to 2900yds+.

Next barrel will be a 1:8 twist, 30" no taper (straight 1.25 truck axle). Looking to use the 190 Badlands or 198 Warner Flatlines @ ~3150fps.

Also check out pva 198 bullet better than the 198 flatline bc wise and cheaper

I have a SAC built .300wm with 28" barrel, 1/10 twist. Iv'e taken it to 1,680 yards so far and made hits on a 24" round 5 out of 10! I think this rifle is capable of 2,000 yards no problem. I shoot 215 Berger Hybrids at 3,000 FPS.

26" Scheider 1-10 twist P5 in M24 contour, shooting the Berger 215's at 2860-fps. I've taken it out to 2070-yards.

300WM is no slouch.

I am using an Obermeyer 30 inch 5R tight bore .298-.308 11 twist, Boots told me to use a 12 twist. I load 78.5 grains of 7828SSC and have been getting 3378fps with 190MK. I backed the load off to 78.5gr because I was having bullet failure at about 600 yards.

from my understanding WFL bullets are PVA designs.
I talked to josh at pva about them he helped design warner flatlines but had to wait til he could make his own. His are cheaper and i think alittle better on bc i have not tried them yet

Look at the most recent Doppler Radar measurements from AB on WFL and PVA bullets at Clark’s Knob ELR match. We’re not favorable BC SD.

Get yourself a minimum of a 28" barrel and an 8 twist. I'm running 230atips at 3025fps in west Texas and I've taken my 300, in competition, to 1836y because that's as far as the match went. Have taken it out to 2640y on our property. Atips on dopplar did great at clark's knob and they are jacketed so they splash very well on steel compared to solids.
