I run up to 24x but it's mainly bench shooting. I've taken up to 300yd shots currently but looking for new places to shoot further. It can't hurt to have more magnification but it'll all depend on your application and comfort level IMHO. Some guys like fixed power, some like max 10x, 15x, too many variables.

If your shooting steel out to 600, 10x would be fine. Might 15x for paper

IOR 4.5x14x50 works great, at 800yds + i would put on my NF for watching rounds hit and corrections

I am running a USO 3.2-17 on my POF now but I am using it primarily shooting steel prone from 5-800yds. I had a 3x9 SS and then a USO ST-10 on it that were OK for out to 500 but I wanted more magnification for futher. My plates are 12"x12" so I tend to shoot higher mag over 4-500yds. With the USO I can see my hits or misses well and spot/correct for myself.

Armalite with 21" Noveske barrel 4-16 S&B PM2 P4F. Prior to S&B had MK4 3.5-10 Leupold it worked just fine @ 600 and beyond.

leupold vx3 8.5-25x50. It's nice not needing a spotting scope. Have only shot to 500yds so far, but I can see hits on paper with it at that distance.

IOR 3-18. If weight is a concern go straight 10X. Non-variable scopes always seem to be a little bit more clear than their variable counterparts and they are usually durable, reasonably light and affordable for what you get.
Something like the USO 10X with erek knob would do very well on a 308 AR.

USO 1.8-10x44 with JNG-MIL reticle.
Plenty for long range shooting and at 1.8x with the large ring in the reticle I find it highly suitable for close range work as well.

What is the primary purpose of the rifle other than 600yd max distance?
Generally, clearer glass, not additional magnification, is good on an AR style rifle (223 or 308). I have a Nightforce 1-4x on my 18" AR-10 308 and can easily hit flash targets (10" steel) at 500yds from supported positions.
Plenty of good low power variables to choose from depending on the primary application of the rifle.

IOR 2-12x36 SPARTAN 35mm Tactical MP-8 Dot.
Balistic cam for true 100 yard clicks. Scope has 10 clicks, stopping at each 100 yard value.
Real fast.

I am running my 18" GAP out to 1,000 yards plus so S&B 4-16x42 with Gen2 XR in a LaRue SPR-S Mount (LT-158).
Be sure to give yourself enough eye relief if you plan to shoot slung up...

On a POF 16.5" I set up an Elcan 1.5-6x, good for dfov work close in and sub moa out to 400yds. This optic has proven to be easy and quick to use. I also have a Nightforce 3.5-15x50 F1 which I just mounted using an AR-Recon-S QD mount. Although I have not trained with it yet, I am planning/hoping to be reliable out to 800yds.

Depends if your shooting for small groups on paper or steel. I use the SWFA SS 3-9X42 on steel.

I just got a new 5-25x50 Razor HD that's going on top of my LR-260 to replace the NF I just sold off.

Leupold mark 4 3-10 and also have a cheap jpoint @ 1 oclock
For the range you specified dont really need more than that. I used a cheaper mk 2 3.5-9 which would still work previously.
