I was thinking about building one, then I saw the larue OSR, and fulton armory M110, I am buying a house and this rifle will be a gift to myself. I was on the fence about building one or buying one and even buying a M1a. Now I think I will go with a lighter Ar styled 308 and I think it will be just as accurate as a M1a as long I can find a 20 inch barrel for the 308 ar. got any ideas? Whats your experience with these?

thanks Dan

I don't think you will find an AR-10 with a 20" barrel to any lighter than a similarly equipped M14/M1A.

My AR10 A4 SPR was quite heavy.

Re: 308 AR

really? I havent held a ar in 308 but I did hold a M1a and it seemed bulky. The only thing I dont like is the price of the M1a and then the price of the Sage stock that is 600-800 dollars depending on where you look. I also thought the ar system would be more accurate.

Re: 308 AR

Suggestions and recommendations:

Look for a slightly used Bush or Scout rifle. These have a standard profile 18.0" barrel.
Put it in the tightest fitting USGI synthetic stock you can find and consider a few national match mods.

Remove the Scout mount and run iron sights. This set-up will be rather light and it can deliver very good accuracy.

I love the SAGE EBR stock and recommend the lighter Mod 1 stock with the AR style receiver extension tube. Here is mine.

SAGE, SEI and the M14 Modernization program negate all issues bignada points out below

Re: 308 AR

Basic M1a weighs 9.5lbs w/o magazine, AR-10(T) weighs 11.25lbs with 24" barrel.

Why? Barrel is way heavier profile, Add a national match profile barrel to your M14 and you are right there with the weight.

What you don't get with the M1a really adds up to a lot.
-Poor stock for use with scope.
-Half-ass adaptation for scope use.
-Stocks don't hold their bedding.
-Can't do field service beyond basic rifle strip-down.
-Gas cylinder and pistons are very expensive, not to mention op-rod etc.
-Triggers more complex, not as good.
-Very minimal payoff for Big Money spent to accurize.

I own both. Weighed two rifles before writing this.

If you want lightweight and precision, have 10T barrel contour thinned under handguard. The extra weight comes from the Bolt Carrier Group, mainly. Yet, the BCG and modular receiver and pin-on/off upper receiver is a main reason to buy the 10. That and much better platform for scopes and other optics.

Have owned the Sadlak and some Brookfield gear. Stay away from the TiN gas pistons. They effectively lap your gas cylinder, and that's not a good thing...

All the mods you have to do to make an M1a shoot with precision are about standard with a 10T. Don't sweat the small stuff like weight. You can use lightweight scopes and stay away from the Magpul sniper stock and you'll have it all.

To get the most out of your budget, buy used, and get a Geissele trigger and maybe a Badger or JP Entps float tube. Or just buy a good scope with the money you'll save. Even better, go A2 upper receiver and don't worry about the scope at all. The A2 models often sell for less, you can buy a 10T takeoff barrel or a custom and be way ahead of the game in every way.

Re: 308 AR

My AP4 weighs in just a lil over 9lbs in its current configuration.

Since the photo the annoying rattling MOE grip has been replaced with a hogue and the GGG mount which sits to high for my taste has been replaced with a Larue which is a vast improvement. The bipod was on for photos only. Changes from factory configuration include PRI sights front and rear as well as primary weapons brake.
.

Latest loads are right around .5 inch which it could probably do better but thats just with a 4x acog.

Re: 308 AR

My AR-10 has a 24" barrel free float, NF 3.5-15x56 scope, Magpul PRS, and Harris bipod and is a PIG!!! If weight is your concern look elsewhere LOL!!

I still love her though

The upper is an Eagle arms so the barrel probably is not the greatest. I will probably go with a Krieger barrel from AR15barrels.com. When they make your barrel they can also make a custom headspace gauge that is specific to the barrel they send you. Great if you reload.

Re: 308 AR

I have a DPMS LR308 20" barrel and it's a pig. Sometimes I thing of sending it off to have the barrel reprofiled to something like a .gov profile on the AR15 but the fact that it's a bench only gun the weight works to my advantage.
