308 bolt

Re: 308 bolt

Great starter. I Bought one and started customizing it. I shot it for a couple hundred rounds. I you dont plan on doing much to it at first, I do recomend getting yourself a better stock and bedding it. Go with a good glass and you will have a shooter with not alot in it.

Re: 308 bolt

I do plan on put some into it. i have been looking at nightforce scopes and mcmillan and aics stocks. And a one piece scope base. Do you have any recomendations on other rifes or is that a good one to start with?

Re: 308 bolt

that is a good start in getting a Precision rifle built in the future. Many a great build starts with the Remington 700 platform. When you burn the barrel out a couple of years from now you can use it as a basis for a tactical build.

All your items that you are looking for are top notch; however, if you are new to this world I would spend my money on ammunition up front and practice all that you can.

At first get a good scope (buy one used on the Hide) put a 20 MOA base on the receiver, and get a take off PSS stock or H&S stock at first and have it bedded. Then go shoot it a lot and get good with it and then get the more expensive items later. Just some thoughts.

Re: 308 bolt

If your going to throw the stock away and mount another any way you could start with the 700 SPS Varmint in 308 It'll save you a couple hundred dollars that you could throw at a better stock. If you shop around you can find a new one for well under $500 new and a lot cheaper than that if you look used. You can get a bell and carlson gold medalist for about 250 I'ld recomend shootersdiscount.com they had the best prices I could find when I was looking. Or watch the trades on the forums they got lots of good stuff all the time if your patient. It's not one of my virtues though!

Of course there are other platforms out there in the same price range you got the savages but if your looking for do it your self add on at a budget price your definately going to find more for the 700 than just about any other rifle out there. You could also look at a used winchester 70 your bound to find one somewhere in a gun shop. whatever your choice make sure your happy with it or you'll just end up selling it.

I agree with what was said above, unless you have a lot of fire time under your belt your going to better off spending more money on ammo than your gun. may I suggest getting a bolt action 22 with a target barrel or perhaps a 17hmr you can find a decent tack driver at wally world for about $250 the marlin 917v it's econimical for improving your form getting the trigger time in you need. Then you can always build the other gun on the side by the time you get it built you'll probably want to start reloading just so you can afford to practice on that with some decent ammo. lol!

Yes, Savage makes great rifles to start with.
