I've got a savage 308 10T-SR I'm looking to start loading for. It has a 1-10 twist 24" brl. the application is getting started in PRS style shooting. Has to fit mag length.

I'm looking for recommendations for bullets utilizing H4895 because that's what I use for my 223 loads and logistics wins wars!

Question is go with the obvious 168 or 175 SMK, or are there better options such as hornady ELD, or Berger Match?

I'm still doing load work up with my 18" PA10 with H4895, which outperformed IMR 4064, but both combinations turned in tighter groups than FGMM in 168 & 175 using the 178 ELD-X & BR-2.

I'm hoping that tuning seating depth will keep it consistently sub MOA. I've heard good things about the ELD-X and my limited testing suggests a good load can be found, but I need it to do double duty as a hunting round.

Hornady 178 ELD-X and ELD-M. Try them both. In the end, a good barrel will be easy to load for.

At the end of the day, there's no shortcut to load development and what works awesome in my rifle may suck in yours.

thank you with the replies so far. I know full well there is no substitute for load development and each rig will be slightly different. however i have learned that there are always some stand out bullet powder combos what work will for certain applications.

This is my 1st day on this site and my 1st reply. I have the same sort of rifle, a model. 10 SR 24" fluted bbl. Accu trigger and Stock. Shot like crap UNTIL Torqued ft screw to 40 in lbs and rear to 30 in lbs in 10 lbs increments. Using 168 gr Amax and 38.5 H4895 AOL 2.80 hornady brass. After 1 firing trimmed and neck sized. My results were 200yd . 85" 300yd 1.25" 400yd 1.75". Not worthy of this site but it might get you started. Hope it helps, Nick

Check out the 175gr RDF. I’m starting load workup on it this weekend hopefully with 4064, heard good things about it.

I went with them over the 178 eld because they were cheaper, but have a similar BC.

42.8 gr. 8208 and 175 RDF/LC brass out of my MSR 10 with 20" getting 2677. Just over .5 moa. Slight ejector marks. Backed off to 42.5

My experience is find the right powder charge using a good BTHP match in the weight you want ( 168, 175 etc) and see how she shoots. Then you can usually just change bullets as long as your loads are not on the upper edge of the load development. I have been doing this with my creedmoors (6.5&6) 223 and 308. All used the Hornady match BTHP of their respective calibers and then once the charge was tweaked I substituted different bullets in same weight. I have not had to change my poweder charge at all and usually just a quick seating depth tweak. Now thisay not be the norm...iay just be lucky as hell. And if this is the case yay me. The only caveat to this is the all Copper pills.....they seem to change the formula more so then a Hornady BTHP to a Sierra TMK or MK. Even my Barnes VLDs needed only a seating depth tweak. Now I do not load hot nodes or cutting edge speed/pressure rounds so I am assuming there is more room for variance in pressures between bullet types. So please be safe and don't be afraid to drop powder charge 5% when switching bullets .

When I shot 308, I used 4895 under 155 SMKs (palma 2156). Velocity was north of 2850. I’d give that a try if I were you, maybe with the bergers if you don’t like sierra
