.308 Honady 178 HPBT & RL17 Need load

Re: .308 Honady 178 HPBT & RL17 Need load

I have to agree with Bear. Start at 43gr. I have some RL-17 on the way to go with some 178gr Amax. I have tried Varget and didn't really like my results so I am going to try some RL-17 under them. I will be starting either at 43 or 43.5gr. I have been researching it off and on for about a week on every forum I could find. I have seen loads from 43-51gr for 175-178gr bullets. I think some of those really high charges come from guys who had the bullet seated really close to the lands b/c I don't see how you could get that much powder in at 2.80".

My 20" Kreiger barreled 700 likes 49.2 grains with the 178 AMAX set at mag length. No Heavy bolt, but primers are a little flat. Getting 2680 FPS according to the Magnetospeed.

These are the numbers I got shooting 175gr Sierra MatchKings in my AAC-SD(20"/1:10 twist) today. Should be pretty close to 178gr HPBT. Of course, velocities will vary depending on your barrel length. I saw no pressure signs all the way up to 49gr and may load some a bit higher looking for a new node. All were loaded at 2.860" OAL(magazine length). If you load to 2.80" I am pretty sure you will start compressing powder somewhere around 48-48.5gr. But, if you have a longer barrel you won't have a problem getting velocity without compressing powder.
