I have a 28" Obermeyer tight bore 10 tw barrel and two powders on hand. Varget and Reloader 17. What would be a good starting load to work up for F-class both mid range and 1k? Palma 95 +.030 chamber. Overall length 2.932 at the lands.

Thanks,

38.5 grains of varget got me good groups from my 24" 1-11 tw. no pressure signs at all, i think it was on the slow side , i didnt chrono is. if you got a tight bore and longer barrel , try a couple at 38 or so and work up from that. sierra says 41.1 is max for the 190 hpbt so the berger should be good

You must be joking. In your very short barrel, your MV must be close to about 2200FPS, I seriously doubt you bullets would be supersonic at 800 yards, let alone 1000yards.

Getting your loading info from Sierra is your first mistake; they make wonderful bullets, they do not make or sell powder. To know how much powder to use, go to the powder manufacturer's website.

To the OP, for your short 28 inch barrel, you will need to load at max or maybe above to get great results from the 185. I currently use 44.5 gr of Varget in Lapua cases and I get 2850FPS out of my 32 inch barrel. I am quite happy with the results on paper at 1000 yards.

no doubt I think its slow , thats the only exp I have with that powder just to put .02 in. my pet is 42.3 of 4064 behind sierra 175's thats chrono'd at 2660. I think I still have a few rounds of the other but gonna try to chrono it im bettin a dollar its around 2300 +/-. +1 on sierra, all my loads dont match their stuff<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Sig685</div><div class="ubbcode-body"><div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: sniperdude</div><div class="ubbcode-body">38.5 grains of varget got me good groups from my 24" 1-11 tw. no pressure signs at all, i think it was on the slow side , i didnt chrono is. if you got a tight bore and longer barrel , try a couple at 38 or so and work up from that. sierra says 41.1 is max for the 190 hpbt so the berger should be good </div></div>

There are so many variables involved it'd be impossible to give you a guess more accurate than what you'd probably find just looking in the loading manual on your bench and looking at a similar weight bullet.

Re: .308 loads for 185 berger BT?

From my loading notes.

With the 180 LBT JLK +.01 into the lands I am 2680fps with 44.8 varget, I am unable to locate my notes on the crono for the following, 190 Berger VLD +.01 into the lands I know I was just making it over 2600 with varget at 44 grains but accuracy was between 43.4 and 43.7 at 2575 & 2590ish. This was with a 21.5" rock barrel, standard .308 bore dia and lapua brass.

If it were me Id start with varget around 42.5 to 43 grains and work up in .2 or .3 grain steps until you see/feel pressure signs.

Niles,

I actually had some varget loaded up from 40 to 42.5 grains, No pressure signs so its moving up from there. I was not really shooting for groups but it was hammering at 100. Reloader 17 started at 40 and went to 42 grains. Funny thing was it grouped decently 6" away @ 4 o'clock. No pressure signs so it too is going up.

Re: .308 loads for 185 berger BT?

Well today I found that 43 grains of Varget were the max load for me. I was having hard bolt opening as in needing to smacking it with an open palm and wondering if I would need a mallet. So my load will be somewhere between 42.5 and 43 grains.

The Reloader 17 was a much smoother felt recoil impulse and I am not getting pressure signs yet so its going up.

I might be a little late but have you shot BERGERS seating depth test yet. It is 24 rounds and it helps alot! If your interested let me know and I will spell it out for you. Its real simple.
