i am working up a load for my remmy 700 varmint i took some loads off of handloads.com, i started at 42.5 gains of varget with 168 grain hornady bthp at 2.80 oal using winchester brass and remington primers. i worked up the load .5 grains up to 45.5 grains. i was talking to a buddy and he said that sounded dangerous. i seen some guys on that website doing 46 grains with that bullet. anyways he got me thinking and im freaked out so i thought i would ask here before i fuck up my new rifle that i have been working so hard to get everything perfect. any input is greatly apreciated

Re: 308 safe load

Hodgdons has the safe loads from 42 - 46c 2.800 with a 168 bthp (I used hndy #30501 match)

I have found 2 accuracy nodes, one at 44.8 , the other at 45.7( with the 26" 1:12 bbl sps varmint. Depending on how far you plan on shooting, you should choose your node. If only to 300, then the lower node uses a bit less powder and you may get more loads on the same brass.

I have over 300 shots logged at the higher node and then decided to decrease to a lower node to use at the indoor range.

Also I have used both 2.800 and 2.830 with great results. Everything is sub-moa, the 44.8 has hit half moa on many occasions.
