Re: .308 SLAP

These are not recommended for use in suppressor or muzzle break for those wanting to roll your own. Just a heads up.

Re: .308 SLAP

For some odd reason, I suddenly got an itch to look into this topic.

Twisted .308, thanks for that link to Sabot Reloading Pro... definitely helpful!

A question, though, in case someone here on the 'Hide as experience or knowledge of such things...

Most of the sabot setups I see commonly referenced are for .224 cal bullets in .30 cal cartridges... which usually means ~55gr-ish projectiles. All well and good for hi-velocity 'splat' factor, but what if a person wanted to run say, 80-90gn projectiles, which normally require a somewhat faster twist rate (1-7, 1-8 tw, depending on MV) than commonly found in most .30 cal rifle barrels (usually 1-10 to 1-12 tw). Even 69gn .224 cal bullets generally need at least a 1-9 tw, although if the velocities are high enough it might theoretically work in a 1-10tw... maybe? What about sabot jackets to fire a .224 projectile from a fast twist (1-8 tw) 6.5mm cartridge such as a 6.5x55 Swede or .260 Rem?

Any thoughts on this, or links to where I might find more info on the topic?

TIA,

Monte

Re: .308 SLAP

I worked up some sabot rounds in 300 WM. Used the sabots from EA Brown and 55 grain Vmax because the flat base fit well in the sabot. 223 type powders like H335 are a good place to start. Got to 5008 fps with AA2230 but it was a little too hot. Primer was ugly and the bolt started to stick. Best all around was IMR 3031 pushing them to about 4800 fps. Accuracy was pretty bad, 3-5 MOA. Hits sage rats like something from star wars, nothing of left of them bigger than a quarter. The fireball of unburnt powder is pretty spectacular at night. Fun project but not very useful.

When I was in Iraq it was rare (but not un heard of) for the baddies to have body Armor.

It would seem to ME (I'm not expert) to at least give your people standard ammo as well as the SLAP. Even if they can get it to shoot MOA the standard round I would imagine would have better accuracy and terminal affect down range.

BTW I really enjoy your youtube channel.

Re: .308 SLAP

I don't believe small arms saboted ammo was ever looked at as a viable alternative to standard ammo.

I was simply commenting on the intended purpose. If Hadji is wearing armor that can defeat a standard .30 cal, then the answer is use a 155mm.

Or shoot them in the face.

Re: .308 SLAP

The SLAP round wasn't intended for body armor but rather Armor, as in APC, tanks, etc. When tungsten hits an object it continues to shred into smaller sharper pieces of tungsten until there is nothing left. A volley of these out of an M60 would be nasty. I read a story about a sniper in the first Gulf War using the .50 cal version and it stopped an Iraq APC with one shot and scared the men in the second APC into surrendering. You can find SLAP rounds on gun broker I haven't seen them anywhere else. Whatever is out there in the US is it since they don't make it in .308 anymore. I thought this thread died out, the Mk211 raufoss round I cut open did and it was way more bad ass looking.

I also haven't gotten around to reloading them. The two I fired were a small pop I actually thought they were squibs until I waited and pulled the bolt open. They didn't have much ass so I think the powder is bad.

Re: .308 SLAP

That round just looks like it would ruin your day. I am very glad **not** to be on the wrong end of those...

Re: .308 SLAP

I heard the reason these went away where the mob used them when doing hits. No part of the bullet touches the lands. So you can't match bullet to given gun lands..

Re: .308 SLAP

The accuracy I had when playing with these was minute of small game, but nothing a precision shooter would have been thrilled with.

Somewhere else someone suggested that the twistrate might be having a significant impact for a round that's weight and size are completely different than it was designed for.

The idea of making your own penetrator is a cool idea though.

Re: .308 SLAP

there are still sabots available to stuff a .223 into a .30 cal

the type of .223 head is up to the loader.

don't try them with a brake on, it'll create it's own barrel / muzzle obstruction.

they used to make .30/30, .308, .3006 accelerators

they are not that hard to load, you need a special die, and don't expect moa or sub moa accuracy from them.

Re: .308 SLAP

I don't know if I still have it or not but I used to have a the 30cal tungsten core from a 50cal penetrator that I picked up on the range at Lake City. *I wonder where that thing went?* I'd always assumed that it once had some kind of jacket, but if I recall it did look like a honkin' heavy boat tail bullet. I guess it could have been a sabot.

It made a great center punch, nothing in my garage was harder that's for sure.

Re: .308 SLAP

My grandpa had a couple of these from back when....I never shot them, but pretty cool to have
