Gent's need some help. I want to develop a good subsonic loads for a 308. I recently acquired a rem 700 covert to play with. I've toyed with the idea for a while, the covert pushed me over the edge. The Rem has a 16" barrel 1in 9 twist. Thanks for your help.

    Re: 308 sub sonic loads????

Been doing some reading. Some powder options are trail boss and unique among others. Trail boss seems popular with 175-210 gr bullets. Unique seems popular with 200 gr + bullets. Some say magnum primers help with consistency. Many comments about round nose and flat base bullets too. I would try a 220 bullet and possibly unique.
Anyone know if a 9 twist will stabilize a 240 gr at subsonic vel?

12.2gn of Trail Boss with a Sierra 220gn Pro-Hunter in LC Match brass and about any primer will shoot neat little groups for me. Seems to run 1036, pretty consistantly for me.

Or 10.5gn of TB with a 170gn Flat Nose (ie 30-30 bullet), is a little flatter shooting.
But, if you can only go 1050fps, then you might as well sling a big ass chunk of lead. The 220 hits like a freight train, but it takes 17 MOA to get from 50 to 100yds. It's not bashful about bullet drop.

    Re: 308 sub sonic loads????

I just started trying 175 SMK and 190 SMK subsonic from Southwest Ammo. approx. 4" drop at 50 yrds and 10" drop at 100 yrds. I have 20" 1:10 twist in DPMS .308

But my question is, why are some people recommending a round (blunt) nose instead of the SMK pointed nose?

My understanding is that the round nose is inherently more stable at subsonic velocities. I shot some 180's last week out of a 1:12 20" and the best group was 7/8" and just stable. (11.1 grains Trail Boss and just under the sound barrier)

+1 for the Round nose 180 being more stable. Got bored, tried em at 150 yrds, about 32" drop with no key holes, tried 175 huge pattern and key holes.

I did a bunch of research across all the forums before i started loading my 308 subs. and the round nose being very stable was a resounding theme. I shoot supressed and I wanted something stable and accurate. At 50 yds it shoots 1/2-3/4 moa, which IMO for subs out of something that wasnt really designed for it, is pretty dang good. I killed some racoons a few weeks ago, they didnt know the difference, haha.

I highly recomend trying the 180RN hornadys. They are way cheaper than the SMK's too.
