308 twist rate?

Re: 308 twist rate?

So here's the truthful information you want. The 1/12 is finicky. Yes it can handle 155s and 168s. Depending on your rifle, 175s can be hit or miss. 1/11.25 has proven time and again to handle the 175 SMK but if you want all around versatility for subsonic heavy loads or heavy loads in general the 1/10 twist has proven uber reliable

Re: 308 twist rate?

I can't agree that it isn't about twist. When I first got my 1:12 Krieger, I tried both 175 SMKs and 178 A-Max (says 1:10 on the box). My rifle did well with the SMK, but won't group the A-Max to save its life. I'm talking 1.5" groups at 100 yards where I was getting .5ish with the SMKs on the first trip.

Re: 308 twist rate?

1-10 for me with 168 amax. Cant speak for any other twist, I have only had the 1-10 and it has worked good for me. I have not tried any other weight than 168 though.

Then what is it? Not being a smart ass, but if you make a statement like this please inform us. I'm always willing to hear opinions or learn something new. What are we missing? Especially since the theory that specific twist rates and bullet weights has always been accepted. I am interested.

Re: 308 twist rate?

if it helps at all the army uses 1-11.2 on their m24 and the marines use a 1-12 on their m40a3 so clearly both work very well with 175 smk seeing as both branches use that bullet frequently.

I hate being a stickler but it's 11.25, also remember that all barrels are different and QC controls which barrels make the cut. So who knows how many 1/12 barrels don't make the cut. Last weekend my buddy and myself were shooting and he had a AIAE with the 1/12 and it shot M118LRs like crap. It was a 1 moa gun at 100m and forget about going further it got worse. So not all high quality 12 barrels can shoot 175 grnrs
