Hiya folks, last Friday I purchased a Remington 700 5R and while reloading for it I started comparing the 308 load to my trusty 7.5x55 Swiss. What's your opinion on how the two loads compare? Pros, cons?
.308Win: Higher peak operating pressure. 7.5x55: Lower peak operating pressure but more case capacity.
The 7.5x55mm case is VERY similar to a .284Win case necked up to .308". As a matter of fact, many used to do just that to get reloadable 7.5x55 cases (before they became easily available).
If you chambered a modern bolt action in 7.5x55 (with higher pressures), should run like a 30/06.
It's not problematic to mount a scope or diopters on a K31, you just have to know where to look. But the above not withstanding, is convenience the only major reason to go with 308?
Sergeant, you're dead on, QuickLOAD graphs indicate exactly that. I'll have shooting comparisons between the two platforms as soon as I am able to reload & shoot both with similar loads. The 7.5x55 has long been my favorite but the accuracy of my new 5R has surely attracted me to the 308.
