On this forum have seen "neck sizing". Have always used F/L sizing. Have been leary of it; would someone explain it to me.
Benefits and debits. Can I extend the life of my brass, not that I'm worried there, have a full seabag of it, once fired too.

What exactly are you after chief? Every barrel is different, giving them each different dope. If you want a m118 clone, buy a box of m118 and mimic the results with your own components in YOUR rifle

It was an 8 Shot test at roughly 12 feet from ProChrono. It's a heck of a round, posting three groups at 200 yards of 1.2", 1.5", and a freakishly abnormal .820". When adding even a half grain more powder, groups opened dramatically. The longest it's been shot to is 500 yards, under some fairly good gusting winds. It was like a lazer on 2-liter bottles. Very impressed with the overall performance and mild recoiling of the round, just not sure if there's enough speed to push this particular load out as far as I'd like to one day. Either way its the best running round in this particular rifle. Gonna stick with it.

Hornady A-Max 208
Savage 110FP .308 w/24" barrel @ 1:10 twist and SWFA SS 16X42 scope
Alliant RE-15 powder @ 42.9 gr.
Hornady Match brass sized to 2.005"
Federal 210M primers
Length to ogive 2.259" (0.015" out of lands)

Shot 4 5-shot groups (20 total rounds) @ 300 yds. 50 degrees. North Florida (flat). Wind light & swirling.

Group 1 Max. Spread 4.345" (1.383 MOA) ATC 1.688" (0.537 MOA)
Group 2 Max. Spread 3.804" (1.211 MOA) ATC 1.073" (0.342 MOA)
Group 3 Max. Spread 1.755" (0.559 MOA) ATC 0.618" (0.197 MOA)
Group 4 Max. Spread 1.920" (0.611 MOA) ATC 0.789" (0.251 MOA)

Median value for muzzle velocity is 2465 fps.

The JBM model gave me some really good elevation/windage data. I was shooting at a 12" Shoot-N-C target, and:

3 of 20 were within the 1" black diamond (point of aim)
11 of 20 were within the 3" diameter orange circle surrounding the 1" black diamond
5 were within the 1.5" ring surrounding the 3" diameter orange circle
1 was within the outer 3" ring

Holes are round - no "keyholes" or other anomalies.

Editorial comment: This bullet comes out of my gun like an ICBM. I like it a lot. I am trying to shoot the heaviest/biggest bullet my barrel will stabilize. If your barrel will stabilize the 208, I recommend you try it.

I am working up a load using the Alliant PowerPro 2000 MR powder and hope to post the results soon.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Savage 10fcp w factory 22 inch barrel and chamber 1:10 twist
~3000 foot elevation.
20-60 degree weather during test sessions.

Once fired Winchester brass neck sized with .331 bushing redding die
CCI BR-2 primers
3.217 when measured with scinclair comparator (about .005 jump to the lands of my rifle.)
150gr Nosler acubond
49.2nd varget (over book by .7 gr)
3130fps
Very slight primer cratering, easy extraction and no shiny brass spots.

During ladder testing I went to 50gr before getting extracted marks. 49, 49.5, and 50 gr shot into a 1 inch circle at 350 yards, without wind all three holes would touch in a vertical line.

According to bulletflite on my iPhone this load has less drop and windage out to 1000 than factory southwest ammo 175gr smk loads, and is more accurate than the sw ammo at 500.

Should be an awesome Kritter getter.

Hey guys,

I've got a GAP10 in .308 with a 20" barrel and 11.25 twist. I'm reloading with 168gr amax bullets and federal once fired brass. Federal Match? Large rifle primers.

Looking for a few good loads using Varget and/or RL15. Or if you have the same gun/build let me know what you are having good luck with.

I've tried a search of just the reloading threads with no luck.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Hey folks i have a question on reloading for 1000+ yds. I currently load smk155(not the palmas). My charge is 46gr of varget out of a 26" krieger 5R. With this load i hold right under moa(0.9) @1200yds. I want to stretch further but i think this load wont perform well much further out. Im thinking about load the smk155 palmas with the same charge. According to my rough math the palmas should still be moving at about 1400fps @1000yds. My current load moving around 1275 @1000 yds. Am i going about this the best way or should i just bump it up to 175gr smk's? Thanks for the help

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

I would bump up to the 175's..... I don't know the sectional density of the 155's but with a Krieger 26"er, I would go with the 175's because you will be supersonic well past 1k. Or you could go with the 155 scenars and just load em hoooottttt

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

So how does this get done?
I have a 24"/1:10 twist barrel
Sized up Winhester Brass and built a dead round with the 208AMax. Slicks into the chamber very well; all well at this point.
How are you charging the case, using a drop tube? What I have with 48.5grn. of RL-17 is a compressed charge?
Tried to build a round and wrinkled the bullet.
What's Up?

Holy shit Matt,...we have factory RUAG here as issue NRA ammo. It runs hot and is loaded with the 155 SMK too. Bisley is at 69ft ASL and at 1100 these things fall out the sky certainly not MOA.

155gr SMK in the .308 simply isnt a sub MOA contender at 1200 yds, not unless ur up in the thin dry air of the pakistani borders!!!!

Chief,...RL17 works well in .308 withheavy bullets/long barrels. The UK Internatiuonal Palma Team is using this. 17 does not work well with lighter bullets in .308.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Hey learnin' by the seat of my arse. Glad I learned it here and at the bench instead of on the range. As a rule of personal practice I generally shoot .308 loads with maximum density of propellant, no crimp, dimension taken from the ogive, and the head set into Ls/Gs slightly. Was interested in this round. My normal is a 190SMK on top of 42.2 grns. IMR4064. Primers are somewaht flat, but still have radius; bolt slicks oin extraction With that design I am at full load in the case, silghtly compressed. Point here is that I am not a stranger to max density charges, and the importance of having all these variables "nailed down" so to speak. But, when I set up this A/Max and dropped that "17" into the case, either I was missing something, the guy on page "7" was incorrect or misstated something to me [unintentionally] or I just plain don't get it.
Other aspects of his platfom are identical to mine, but it ain't RL17 in that case that is unless he's using a pneumatic jack to "tmap down" the propellant, ain't no room at the inn. On reflection here, I have come to the consideratrion that I might be unrealistically pushing the performance envelope of "my" .308 at this point. Maybe, I will revisit this issue at a much later time.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Hornady 178 BTHP
Winchester Brass
Varget 43.8 Grains
OAL 2.820

This load produced the best groups and ES/SD from my 17.5" Surgeon with a Brux barrel.

Average Velocity- 2547

*** This load was my recommendation but the blood, sweat, and tears of loading it goes to Andrew @ McCourt Munitions. His brass prep and attention to powder charge detail is awesome. This load will be my go to load as it shot 1/4 MOA at 100 and 1/2-3/4 MOA at 620 yards.

*** This loading is slightly compressed with the Hornady 178 BTHP's ****

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

does anyone here have a sako trg 22 .308 load?

I'm looking for a good starting load at around 2.880 OAL using varget and 178g amaxes.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Just got back from testing some 185 Berger Hybrids. I am jumping them .015" in a 26" Krieger 1 in 10 twist barrel. My two most accurate loads were:

42gr Varget
CCI BR2
LC LR Brass
2623 fps avg
14.78 ES
5.56 SD
5 shots .95" at 250 yards

43gr Varget

11.28 ES
5.38 SD
5 shots .9" at 250 yards

Bullet: 178 Amax
Brass: Once fired FGMM
Primer: Fed 210
Powder: 43gr RL-15
Seated to 2.82

Sub 1/2 moa at 300yds. I'm not sure what the actual velocity is since it hasn't been chronographed, but it takes 5 moa to get on at 300 and 15.5-15.75 moa at 600yds.

43.5gr's shot close, but had a slightly wider spread at 300 (1.5").
Didn't get a chance to go to 300 due to a limited number of rounds, but 44grs printed .4" at 100yds.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Need some loads that will work out to 1,000 yards using the 308 cal 155 grain AMAX or 155 lapua in a short (20" LTR) barrel.

Can it be done?

I want develop a load my GF can shoot a lot of to develop LR skills and can take with her to a precision rifle class.

Have you run the other loads through virgin brass and fired brass with equal sized groups? I initially thought that a little work hardening from the first firing might change the neck tension slightly, but if it only happens with the Varget 45.0 grain load... that makes me wonder too.
</div></div>

Using the Hornady headspace gauges I figured out from a factory round like fgmm or Hornady tap or virgin winchester brass to a once fired piece of brass from my 5R inquestion, the shoulder blows out .009" to .010". So I would say excessive headspace is to blame. I guess it changes to pressure enough to where it knocks it out of the accuracy node that the 45.0 charge weight and virgin brass works do well with.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

My .308 deer hunting load recently worked up using OCW method -
Shooting out of a Savage 10PC - .308 w/ 20" barrel, 1 in 10 twist.

Hornady 150 gr. SST
46.3 gr Varget
Hornady match brass
CCI large rifle primers
COAL: 2.735
FPS - Average 2750
Group size @ 100 yds - 3/4"
Elevation 1250
Temp. 75 F
Humidity 65%
BP - 28.85
Calm - no wind.

Same day using above but with 45.7 gr. Varget
FPS - Average 2700
Group size @ 100 yds - 5/8"

Also tried 46.0 gr Varget, but group opened up considerably...... Will be running a 5 shot round robin style test of 45.7, 46.0, 46.3 again to rule out shooter error.

46.3 gr Varget showed no signs of pressure, primer problems or sticky bolt lift either. FPS gains were not there. Averaged right around 2750 also. Group went high and spread out.

All shots over a Pro Chrono chronograph at 12 feet.

I also shot some factory Hornady loads from the same rifle - 150 Gr SST's and some 165 Gr SST's on a different day - roughly same enviromental conditions. Both factory loads chrono'd at an average of 2750 FPS.

After more testing I settled on 46.5 Gr. Varget for the 150 Gr. SST's. Average speed over the chrono still stayed around 2750, but group settled down and shrank in size. Will load up a batch at 46.5 and see what happens.

Shot out to 550 yds (6/30). From a 100 yd zero, up 3.75 mils, DING dead center on some steel. On paper was able to shoot a group just under 5.5 inches @ 550 yds.

both loads out of a rem 700 5r milspec rifle and will shoot well under a 1/2 moa even to 600 yards.
I know they are not screamin barrel burners but dont need them to be.
Hope this helps let me know how they work for you.

Loads tested in Tikka Tactical 24" barrel, some signs of over pressure (flattened primers, some stamping of bolt face on brass - bolt release was easy however) as rated load should only deliver 2650 fps, I was at 43.53 to 43.55 grains thrown in LC cases.

Accuracy was good, shooter not so good, mirage was funky. Distance was at 200 yards at Burro far right side which is only 2 feet over the rocks and grass, hence the mirage.

1/8" clicks nightforce 8x32 benchrest scope -sorry about the data not lining up in columns.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

178gr Amax
44.5grs of varget
Win primer
COAL 2.846
Win x1 Brass

Avg FPS 2608 out of a 20" barrel with a YHM 7.62 suppressor. Most accurate load I've used for this particular rifle. Bug hole groups and good velocity, figured I'd share.
