After a lot of thought i have decided that my next rifle build is going to be a .338 lapua. i plan on building it from the ground up and i want to start with the action.

my question is what actions do you guys recomend?

Re: .338 action's

I was JUST talking over the same build with my builder..... It would be nice to have prices and pics of each item when you can get them... or even links to manufactures used.

Defiance! Only one to consider. Many shops here on the sight have them made with their labeling, or you can order from Glen himself. 750 bolt diameter, extended thread tennon or standard remmy configuration, Whatever inlet for bottom metal. IE Wyatts, Badger, BDL, or Seekins.

This, I got to fondle and work a few, they are awesome but pricey!

Re: .338 action's

We will have some TAC338 actions in stock in a month or so.

Stainless body black oxide coated
Wrap around bolt handle design, will never come apart, joint is like a pipe joint
Bolt is Melonite coated and is .750 diameter specically designed for this application.
Longer tenon, lugs
Uses AI type mags, Wyatt or Seekins, Weatherby boxes etc
Left or right
Perfectly matched extraction and entrance cams with larger surfaces that will not wear away cut on rotary table to exactly match
20 or 40 moa matched and pinned rails for only $50

What more can you want for $900 (or any price for that matter)

Re: .338 action's

The plan is to start reading and researching now. it took me almost 3 months to decide on the caliber. it was between.

300 mag, 7mm , 300 short mag, .338

i plan on buying the action some time after X-mas this year. between now and than i have 3 birthdays for 3 kids and X-mas so i figured i would start looking now.

i also have to get all the reloading gear. i may start working on some of that suff soon i need every thing for reloading. up till now i have never need to so i dont have any reload gear. so ideas on that are welcome as well.

thank you for all the info so far and i will keep this thread alive as long as i am building it.

Re: .338 action's

Very difficult to improve on the Sako M995 action.
Buy a donor TRG-S in Lapua Mag, Lazzeroni, or .378wby variant for about $1K and you are set. The action is The Same as the TRG-42 except for the safety lever slot by the bolt release. Can even replace with 22/42 trigger if you so desire.

The m995 action offers you original design specifically for the Lapua and .378wby family super-magnum ctgs, plus gives you benefit of interchangeable bolt bodies should you ever want to switchbarrel with .473" or .535" boltface cartridges. Cost you about $300 for an interchangeable bolt body.

Best solution is to buy a new TRG-42 in Lapua mag and order the barrel you want day your rifle arrives. By time you've shot-out the factory barrel, your replacement is ready....

If you don' like the TRG42 stock, McMillan can build you one that is more traditional. Should be pretty easy to sell an as-new condition fully equipped TRG-42 stock...

Re: .338 action's

Buy an action built specifically for the .338 Lapua Magnum. Buy either a Sako TRG-42 or an Accuracy International and be done with it. They are both outstanding rifles ready to go straight out of the box.

I agree 100%. The TAC338 is specifically designed for this cartridge and is ready to rock right from the box. When and if you ever get tired of it, will have great resale value too.

There is actually differances betwen the two actions.
The TRG-s have "open top" solution and is using the conical dovetails as mostly civilan sakes have, while the TRG have a 17mm rail almost all way, and have a small ejectionport instead of open top.
So for this kind of gun, the TRG is prefered as the scopemounting is easyer and definietly better.

Re: .338 action's

A lot of great suggestions. this is also the reason it took me so long to decide on a caliber there are a lot of good ones out there.

i have a lot of reading and research to do on all of the suggestions as i build this thing i will be looking for more suggestions and advice.
