New Contest Starting Now! This Target Haunts Me
Tell us about the one that got away, the flier that ruined your group, the zero that drifted, the shot you still see when you close your eyes. Winner will receive a free scope!
I just had a pretty in depth chat with Jered down at APA a week or so ago about a shorty 338lm build and THAT GUY KNOWS HIS S..T on 338's....try giving him a call, very sharp guy. I think you'd be surprised at usable lengths.
with 250 gr Berger Hyb running right at 2750 fps I am just under 1200 fps @ 2k
I had it built to stay short with my can for long range Elk, but was surprised how far it will reach...no doubt longer is better for ELR, but I like my compromise
26-28" I think is an optimum balance for shooting .338LM. You can go shorter if you're staying inside of a mile and you should go longer if you plan to go to 2000 yards or further.
I often shoot an 18" barrel but it starts to reach its limits around 1500 yards. Beyond that it just can't push the bullets fast enough. For comparison, I spent several years shooting a 26" barrel and it was good to a mile, easily, but at 2km I was struggling whereas guys with 32" barrels were making repeated hits. For that reason I'm building a 34" improved chamber barrel
