.338 federal

Re: .338 federal

It is a short-to-medium range hunting, brush-gun, larger game load developed by Federal in conjunction with Sako using necked up .308 Win brass. It has found some favor with hunters given that it packs a nice punch in a lightweight, short-action package and one that will fit the magazine restrictions of the semi-auto, large-bore AR platform rifles (Armalite AR-10, DPMS LR-308, etc.).

What specifically did you want to know about it aside from something like that??

Re: .338 federal

Good point there... I put a 3-9x50 redfield on it and shot about 10 rds through it. I love the way it shoots, but not too happy with that scope. I think I'm going leoupold. Thanks for input.

3-9x or maybe a variable up to 10x would be the absolute highest I would go for magnification on that rifle. After all, it isn't a long-range performer or one that you need some high magnification optic on to get the most out of the rifle. Elk at 200-300yds or hogs in brush conditions at even less distance don't need high magnification.

If you go with Leupold, check out their 2.5-8x scopes. They are a nice, lightweight and compact package that give you a good lower magnification for those short, quick shots in the brush and 8x for those somewhat longer shots in more open conditions. Similarly, something like the NF 2.5-10x models are very well suited to this type of setup and would be my "go-to" optic for a rifle like this.

Re: .338 federal

Can't say enough good things about the SS 3-9x42. Especially with the package that comes with it right now (Bobro mount, killflash, sunshade and BC flip caps) it is a hell of a deal. That would be all you need on your DPMS. The FFP MilDot reticle would give you hold-over capability to maximize effective range and the optics are about five steps up the food chain from the Redfield. $599 for the whole shebang.

Re: .338 federal

I agree with the 10x statement. The bullet drop is too much for more than that. The ss looks really nice I'll probably go to it. Definitely cooler looking than my antique redfield and i really cant afford the us optics one i want. Lol thanks for all the info.

Re: .338 federal

I read some good reviews from gun scribblers (who get paid to write nice things about their advertisers, by the way), but opted out due to the fact that Federal is the only source I could find for brass and due to the fact that I have a .338 WM. Have fun with yours, it is a very nice medium range big game rifle.

It appears that most got OT and went hard into scopes. Just sayin'...

Take regular 308 brass and run it through the sizer...Instant 338 Federal brass. </div></div>

What he said, Redding type S die with expander ball plus any old 308 brass = instant 338 Federal brass on the cheap.

Re: .338 federal

I have the DPMS lightweight hunter 338. Its every bit as accurate as any of my 308 ARs. I tried forming the brass from 308 brass, but had some chambering problems and the thinned out necks didn't hold the bullet tight enough on some rounds. The factory ammo from Federal is pretty good stuff, but at $25 a box it gets expensive quick. The once fired brass functioned fine with only 1 failure to go into battery. That was for 100 rds fired. With handloads and the factory ammo you should get close to moa. Mine was grouping around 1 3/4" for the first 30 shots, but has come down in the last 100. I have to work up a good handload and shrink it more.

Re: .338 federal

I bought 200 grain fusion one cause they were loaded for 25.00 a box and I could save the brass, but I had my dad with me and he noticed a lot of difference in muzzle flash between shells. Im going to a gun show this weekend I'll buy me some dies and a sizer and give it a shot. If I don't like the results ill probably trade or sell it

What make of 308 brass were you necking up? The 338 Edge shooters have had pretty good luck with the Remmy 300 RUM brass.
