338 LM with N560 and 300 grain Lapua Scenar

Re: 338 LM with N560 and 300 grain Lapua Scenar

I don't have any experience with N560 but I shoot N170 with 300 gr scenars and really like it. The only problem is finding it. If you want to use the 500 series I'd go with 570 over 560 for the 300 gr. bullets. You won't come anywhere close to a full case with 560.

In Italy we have only 560....

I tried with H1000 but the SD is very hight...

Re: 338 LM with N560 and 300 grain Lapua Scenar

A powder, before it can be introduced in the Italian market, should be evaluated by a team of "experts".... this is frustrating thing. At the moment, in Italy, we can buy only N110-120-130-140-150-160-165-170-540-550-560 but not the N570...

It's crazy...

I own Sako TRG 42, rebarreld with a 27" Border 1/10. The h1000 is able to push a 300 grain's bullet very fast: 880 m/s with no pressure sign, but the SD is very hight in my opininion.

Re: 338 LM with N560 and 300 grain Lapua Scenar

If you want to stick with Vihtavouri powders I'd give N170 a try. I'm running 91.0 grains with 300 scenars and it's slightly compressed. I don't have access to my reloading notebook right now but if I remember right it's around 2650 fps (808 ms) out of my SRS with a 26" barrel and less than 20 ES on all the rounds I've ran through my chronograph.

Re: 338 LM with N560 and 300 grain Lapua Scenar

too bad about N570 in Italy. I was using 560, but 570 got me another 100-125fps and accuracy seems quite good.

Re: 338 LM with N560 and 300 grain Lapua Scenar

What's the deal with VV only offering N570 in 1lb containers? I'd want 8lb kegs especially loading for .338 LM.

Pricey sure, but 1lb containers make little sense other than initial load testing.

Great, can you share some loads?

A.

Re: 338 LM with N560 and 300 grain Lapua Scenar

Yes ... basically I use:

- Fed 215M primer
- 300 gn Scenar
- Lapua 338 (LM) brass
- 92.0 grains of N570
- Depth: 0.057" of the lands, fwiw.
- Barrel: 27.14" barrel
- MV: 2735, very good SD (need logbook for exact number, in the 20s)

p.s. yes it comes in 1lb cans, yes 92.0 grain loads emptys it out fast, but it's worth it. If we are going for max accuracy, which we are with 338LM otherwise it's too expensive to shoot pigs with, at long distance then we need the highest MV with least SD (most impt to me!!!) and be able to burn out the brass or the throat.

So for me it's N570 or no 338LM shooting. Until something is proven better.

Please, with N560.

I have a little problem to find N570...

Thanks

Re: 338 LM with N560 and 300 grain Lapua Scenar

Of course, you wanted N560 loads. Well I stopped using N560 and in fact gave it away to a friend nearby. I went with Retumbo because on the chart it seemed to burn between 560 and 570.
