I plan on buying a 338LM. I'm going to be buying reloading supplies. What is the brass of choice, lapua? Any decent besides lapua? Preferred bullet? Looks like RL33 is a decent powder to start with.

Will be used for long range target shooting only.

I'm looking at the RPR in 338 or the savage 110 in the HS stock for the rifle. Leaning to the ruger. Thanks

Yes. In general, Lapua brass will serve you better for this caliber. The cartridge was literally developed in and for Lapua brass. Not saying other bras won’t work, because there are good manufacturers making brass for this round. I use Lapua for this.

As to bullets, it really depends on what your specific definition of long range target shooting is. If you mean from 100-1200 yards or so, then the 250-285 bullets work really well in this range. My 285 load is a one hole load at 100 yards and hammers out to 1200-ish yards. Much past that and most are using 300g Berger’s or similar. I love the Warner 255.5g Flatlines for staying supersonic past 2000+ yards.

Powders besides RL33 are H1000 and Retumbo. There’s a good load thread here in Reloading Depot:

I’ve not shot the Ruger RPR in .338 LM and am shooting a bedded and cheek piece modded Savage 110 LRP with good success.

Lapua brass, Sierra 250 Matchkings, H7828, CCI Mag primers always worked awesome in a Savage 110 BA that I had to play with...

Bought some factory rounds, cheap Federals for the brass that wouldn’t hit a dinner plate at 200 plus the brass didn’t survive 3 reloads....

My Lapua brass has about 13 reloads on it and still going strong

Rifle is a tack driver with my handloads, loaded them right in the middle of published data
