Hey guys. I decided to make a post that way I can get all opinions. I am having a small issue with my 40x. I have been talking to SDWhirlwind about it but I am not being clear or don't know what Im talking about.

I took some pictures to show him but figured everyone might benefit from this issue.

When closing the bolt empty or loading, the bolt feels like it is hanging on something. I have taken the feed ramp out and that seems to help some but not completely. The Bolt and Receiver have matching numbers. I have cleaned it really well and reassembled it. I Just took pictures of some of the parts/trouble spots. i didnt clean it again after i shot it so there is some White Grease on feed ramp. Im not sure if the Lugs are hanging up either. There are some wear spots and that is what i took a picture of. I also have a picture of where I feel the bolt starting to hang. Im not sure this is enough info and if you need more I can try to explain more or take more pictures with a camera and not my phone. What can I do to fix this. I will probably go see my Gun Smith in a few weeks if he can fit me in, but figured posting here wouldn't hurt. Maybe I am overlooking something simple. Its not a Huge deal either as it does not affect the way the gun shoots, I would just like a nice smooth bolt.

Re: 40x Bolt issues

Lets see if I can help. Keep in mind i have never actualy seen a 40x.

1. Is this a new problem or has it always been a problem?
2. Is it only drag when you push the bolt or pull and does it do it the hole length of the reciver?

Re: 40x Bolt issues

Ummm.. No. There is no spring of any sort on or around the feed ramp.

The bolt only starts to stick about an inch from the breach. Im pretty sure the feed ramp has something to do with it.. The screw that holds it in is tight. If I loosen it up it gets better but then the ramp moves as the bolt goes across it.

Re: 40x Bolt issues

Ok there is a metal plate on the left of the receiver. Look across from the ejection port. There is a metal tab of sorts that keeps the round on the feed ramp so you don't have to place it exactly on the ramp every time. Mine was stuck and caused the bolt to stick about an inch or so before the bolt closed. There should be a bent metal spring behind that part that keeps it out when the bolt is open. I did not know it was there because it was stuck from gunk. Use a small flathead to pry the part out. Be careful or you will break the spring. If you break the spring I think numrich carries them.

Re: 40x Bolt issues

Thanks I will see what I can find. ANy way you can take a picture of yours.

I found a manual online so Ill see if it lists the part there. I know there is no spring or maybe its stuck as I can put the round past the feed ramp on the interior where I have to turn the rifle over to dump it out.

Thanks for the help so far. Ill let you know what I find

Re: 40x Bolt issues

Check the front trigger guard screw. I had a similar problem with my 40X, and after checking I found that because the stock had shrunk due either to low humidity or to over tightening the screw, the tip or the screw raises above the floor of the receiver.

Re: 40x Bolt issues

Thanks guys. Its not the screw as I have taken that all the way out based on previous threads I have read.

JRB.. I think your on to something. I took out that plate and the bolt goes in much better. I can tell it is still sticking on the lugs but a good LAP job should cure that. Im just trying to figure out what I can do to fix this. I cleaned it really good. There are signs of wear (Read- Shinny Rub Spots) on the plate. The spring seems to be in good condition though. It doesnt move much at all if any once the bolt has been put in place. It sorta feels like it is to wide for the space? Has anyone ever noticed anything like this?

Re: 40x Bolt issues

The metal tab seems to wide? Mine did to. Lightly tap the edge with the butt of a screw driver. Lightly. It takes a bit. But my bolt ran smoother once I had it working properly. As for the lugs use a permanent marker on the back sides of the lugs. If it removes it off both side leave it be. Try some light grease on the back side of the lugs.

Re: 40x Bolt issues

Mine is a touch tight to close. But I have the incorrect bolt. It still is a tack driver. One more question. Is it tight because you are trying to chamber a round?

Re: 40x Bolt issues

Not its tight even when closing when its empty. I tried you screwdriver trick with a small hammer and I think I got it. It still fits tight in its spot but the bolt moves so much better now. Im not sure I have it perfect but its livable until I have APA look at it and make it smooth as butter.
