I am planning on buy a Viper just deciding between on whether it's worth spending the extra money for the 50mm. The scope is going to go on an AR varmit rifle and will shoot no more than 500yds. I know the light gathering will be better with the 50mm and the resale would be higher but so would the initial cost. Any other advantages to buying the bigger objective with everything else being the same between the 2 Vipers?

Re: 44mm vs 50mm Vortex Viper?

I can't give you a comparison, but I can give you my experiences...I own the 44mm and have used it to shoot to 1000 yards on 2 moa targets and all ranges in-between. I have shot P-Dogs with it and my wife used it in a match a few weeks ago with targets to 900'ish. Not once have I/we wished we had a 50mm obj. The 44 sits low and is VERY bright. It is a nice package. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

Re: 44mm vs 50mm Vortex Viper?

Never looked through the 44mm Viper. But I picked up a like new 50mm Mil dot on here for less than the cost of the 44mm, so I can't complain. How far east in ND are you?

Thank or the info everyone, I'll save the cash and get the 44mm and with the cash I saved buy rings and go shoot. Hey tt350z I'm near Hillsboro half way between Fargo and Grand Forks, what about you?

Go up to any rancher in the area and let them know you want to help them if they have a pdog problem, most will glady accept those dog hole are hell on cattle legs. If you military they may be more inclined then if your not from the area and working the oil fields. Coyotes should be in the area too. Let me know if that doesn't work, I know some guys in the Bottineau area that may be able to point you to a lead.

Re: 44mm vs 50mm Vortex Viper?

Ive got 2 of the 44's one is on my rifle and the other is in a box brand new complete with sunshade because I messed up. I like the one that is on my rifle, the one thats in the box still I need to sell and try and get my money back out of it. Vortex has an excellent warranty program unlike some of the other similarly priced optics, Vortex has a no questions asked policy, where some of the others will require you to take it back to the retailer you purchased from. That is fine as long as you are number one owner ....... number two onwer is left out in the wind if anything goes tits up and is at the mercy of the retailer. Not with Vortex, its a lifetime warranty for any and all owners.

You have coyotes in your area....The further West you go, the better....

For P dogs, you need to get S-SW of Bismarck a ways.
