I've been lusting after a 45-70 highwall for a long time now. My dilemma has been that I'm torn between the desire to target shoot in BPCR type stuff and hunt with it, and the two don't seem to work in the same rifle. I don't want to haul a barrel 30" or longer into a tree stand, and the versions with shorter barrels aren't set up for tang mounted sights nor do they work as well for targets.

I now have a new Win 1885 Highwall Sporter on the way. Before any purists go all vernier on me this is for deer hunting, I came to the realization that I don't have time to target shoot in another category. I'm shooting in F-TR and I'm getting an AR set up for Service rifle this yr so for the time being I don't have time to shoot a 45-70 at targets, and if I decide to do that I'll get a different BPCR either from Winchester or maybe some other caliber heirloom from C. Sharps and have at it.

This is a model that Winchester discontinued a couple of yrs ago. It has a 24" barrel, straight but-plate with a real pad. (not a crescent shaped shoulder breaker)

The real question, has anyone tried a BDC reticle on a 45-70 that works? I don't want a big scope on this rifle, it would just look sillier that it already will with a scope. I've used a Bushnell DOA on my muzzle loader and with 250 shockwaves over 100gn of 777 it kicks ass out to 200 yds. I'm wondering if the same DOA 250 will work on a 45-70? Slinging a 350 it should be ballistically similar to my inline I think.

I'm open to ideas. When I get the rifle in I'm going to mount the Bushy off of the muzzle loader and see how it works out.

Re: 45-70 scope? Maybe a DOA?

I'm currently running a Leupold VX-1 turkey hunting scope on my .45-70 guide gun. It has a duplex reticle with the addition of a circle that subtends 4" at 40 yards, IIRC. With the circle and the duplex you will have three holdover points on the reticle that may work depending on your load/zero. This probably isn't the best solution but it could work........good luck.

I'll take it to the range with the DOA as soon as I get it. The more I look at the numbers the more I think the hold overs on the DOA 250 will be close.

I've never been able to get chrono data on my muzzle loader. I think the sabot separating from the bullet and the blast messes with it, but I'm assuming that I'm at about 1800FPS shooting 250 shockwaves over 100gn of 777. If I'm right and I get about 2000 fps from a 350 the 200 yd holdover will probably be w/i 2 inches or so. That will make a dead deer every time.
