ATTENTION .45acp HAND LOADERS !

Ok so this might be old news to a lot of people , but if it saves somebody some pain then I dont mind lookin a fool. But apparently federal switched from using large pistol primers to small pistol primers in some of their cartridges. Easy to miss if your not looking for it.

Last night one of these small pocket jobbies got mixed into my brass and i set off a larger primer trying to seat it in the small pocket, funny thing was I didnt even feel a change in resistance!, just POP.

I got off lucky, nothing hit the powder hopper or the other primers in the tray (miraculously) , and aside from some press damage and my ears ringing since last night I consider myself blessed.

So watch that brass , and If you know of any other companies to watch for Id love to know

I hope that helps somebody

I pick up a lot of pistol brass at the range. Good to konw. Thanks for the heads up.

yep; lots of them have converted to small primers. Need to check each case you pick up at the range to be sure you cull teh small from the large. When I find small primer brass it goes straight into the recycle bin.

Some day I'll have to convert, as they may well stop selling the large pistol primers... but no time soon.

"Easy to miss if your not looking...."

Most of the danger is to our shorts. Fortunately primers won't blow our heads off and, considering we rarely look down the mouth of a case as we prime they are unlikely to blind anyone.

Not a bad thing to repost once in a while, good call.

This is one of the reasons why I feel that progressive presses which have powder staged directly above the primer seating ram are a fool's accident waiting to happen.

Many years ago, a friend an I were loading tons of 45acp on a Star machine for match's, we were shooting. Long short we missed one piece of GI brass that we failed to remove the crimp from. Somewhere between 80 an 100 primers went off next to 3lb's of Bullseye. The powder did not lite, but the primers left a lasting impression on the ceiling. Yes we modified the machine, (rather quickly I might add) so if we were stupid again, there was no way the powder would go off. Just when you think you have a grip, Karma, steps up.

They did not switch primer size.
The cases you are using are made for "green" primers, as in Non Toxic (NT). Often the bullets loaded in these are also frangible or reduced richochet. They are most often training rounds. The cases are small primer but if you look closer they have an enlarged flash hole. The NT priming compound is said to be more explosive than normal compounds and the larger hole is to counter act primer setback upon ignition.

This is a good reason to also reccomend sorting brass by head stamp, as well as inspecting cases before use. Be mindful when buying once fired brass as these may be mixed in or will make up the bulk of it.

The brass is absolutly usable, you just need to work the load back up safely, not to mention keep it seperate.

More and more often this comes up.

i found my first one in my dillon, was loading along and it went clunk when it stopped, let the handle down wondering WTF and pulled the case and saw it had a small primer hole, i did the same thing, sorted thru my brass and pulled the small ones out. all the ones i got were from when we were shooting frangeable ammo at an indoor range

Hey fuzzball i ment its easy to miss during brass sortingot priming. I never look down a case , thats nuts. btw wolf primers and a lee loadmaster are a good combo, when shit fails all the primers didnt blow and the powder was seperated, n enough to be safe

Whoever is the owner of Federal and everything made by them has the small primers now. I have seen Federal, Speer, Blazer. I was told it was because of cheaper setup cost to stay with the small primer.

This is news to me, but is definatly possible. Just another reason to inspect your cases.
