458 SOCOM at 1001 yards

Awesome shooting.

Big, heavy bullets simply rule supreme in the momentum department. They do not even need to be that fast to deliver a bone crushing energy dump. Personal experience using .58 minie balls and MAXI conicals in medium twist barrels and 220-300 grain conicals in pistol cartridges. All triple digit yardage performers.

Someone once had a project of running the 750gr .50 BMG projectiles right at about 1000fps from some necked up brass.
Looked to be interesting (if a bit unwieldy) for maximum subsonic hurt.

Yeah, I fucked up and bought an ATN scope like 20 years ago... NOT making that mistake again. Adding NV or thermal to it only scares me more. IMO, it's only slightly better than if Counter Sniper got into NV (god, would THAT cost!? --for contract overruns that is!). Yes, I expected more out of a $199 optic, but I think anyone would.

It literally came with plastic rings. Plastic rings. I called and said "WTF"? and they sent me their "heavy duty tactical" rings. Those are the worst goddamn rings I've ever seen, I kept 'em just to show 'em to possible ATN purchasers. I have a set of $20 HD steel rings, cheap gun show shit, that are WAY better. You know the ones, the Badger knockoffs. Oh, and did I mention the scope fogged up when the sun came out? Or that the reticle rotated inside the tube at one point?

Or that the seller was under the impression this would be used on a possible 2004 deployment? (no fucking way, and I didn't have to go anyway, but I wanted to see if they had the sack to speak up or let someone actually go into harms way with this shit; they most certainly would, and would have no problem equipping your entire platoon too).

I don't know, maybe their NV is better, but they done burned that bridge so I guess I'll never know.

I am a little ashamed to admit that I bought a ATN Day/Night scope a few years ago with the intentions of using it for hog and maybe dusk & dawn deer hunting if it was legal. It didn't take long for me to realize I had made a huge mistake it promptly went on eBay and I recouped about 75% of my money back. With that said if a legit scope maker would invest/develop in digital scope technology it would be pretty damn cool.

Had a atn 15 years ago.
It was a “z” model, ocular reflected up to house a 70mm? objective.
Had it on a ar-50 back when I had more time than brains.
Glass was so shitty and green it was like looking through a hieneken bottle
Look cool on the rifle but that’s it.
Fit and finish were so crappy, I think they coated it with a super thick paint/tar to cover gaps.

Okay, so maybe I'll be the first to say it. Is it just me, or does that target not look to be anywhere near 1000 yards? Maybe it could just be that the target is huge, thus making it seem to me that it's 200 yards away lol??
Have made hits at 600 on a 2/3 or 1/2 silhouette target with subsonic a That's holding over past the last bdc hash with a leupold 1.5-5.

I was skeptical the first time I saw the video, but I've honestly never shot at 1000 yards. I ran the calculations based on the information given and had the muzzle pointed at around 10 stories over the gong.
According to the shooter when presented with that he said it was more like 183 feet or something like that. I've since deleted that conversation. He also said that the scope was 2.5x in order to keep the gong in the sight picture.
Yes. It's a stunt at best, and how many of those pricey chunks of brass are littered around there before that one hit the mark is anyone's guess.
I too thought the target looked to be more like 1000 feet than 1000 yards when they zoomed back out and showed the 100 yard target in the same view.
I don't want to make any initial commentary in order to get some honest feedback from the gallery here.
These folks announced today that they are moving to Montana, so who knows what they'll be putting on video when they get out on truly wide opened spaces.

ELR shots with big, "slow" projectiles certainly is able to be done, but it is a game of pure trial and error and endurance. Using calibers like .458 SOCOM is just insane, unless you got all the money in the world to feed it. If I am going to be doing something like that, I'd settle for something that I can burn for an extended amount of time without burning up my wallet. This is a handloader's game right there.

I’d have to seriously question this and call it movie magic. Some of it seems legit but it certainly doesn’t appear anywhere near 1000 yards especially when they zoom out and show this supposed 95 yard target. I mean I know optics can do some crazy stuff but...here is a pic of 720 yds. There is a building way off in the distance and that Jeep is about 50 yards from where I’m standing. I call BS! Well crap. Something happened to my pic and I can’t get it to reload.

I take that back, it could very well be compression from the optics. It probably is roughly about that distance.
