Yes, it is supposed to be adjustable. I had the same experience as you. Mine hardly was changed by turning the adjustment screw. I bought a Timney trigger and am sooo glad I did. It is way better than the X mark pro. I have also had really good success with the old style rem triggers, most gunsmiths will adjust them and smooth them out to about 2 lbs for under $50. If you really want a nice one, Jewell triggers are top of the line. Reworked Rem trigger- $50 Timmney 510- $120 Jewell- $200
Some people are having the x mark triggers reworked as well, but I have heard they are not as nice as the old style. Do yourself a favor and ditch the xmark.

mnshortdraw thanks. But over $1K rifle and I have to go to an aftermarket trigger? That doesn't quite seem right, especially since the Xmark is supposed to be adjustable. What's the deal with today's manufacturers anyway, my milsurp K31s have wondeful triggers and they are stock military issue.

Flush the trigger mechanism out with lighter fluid or carb cleaner, let it dry COMPLETELY and lube with a very light oil like a turbine oil (like zoom spout) or Rem Oil.

Most tactical rifles are set about 3.5 pounds.
This is a very good setting, light enough for precision work, heavy enough to prevent any but the most boneheaded ND's.

I tried cleaning and lubing mine, with poor results. I couldn't seem to get mine below 4lbs. I agree, they should have a better trigger from the factory, many others do. I have tried a few of my friends Savage accutriggers, and I like those. I was opposed to spending more money on my 5r, but the Timney was the best thing I did to improve the accuracy capabilities of my rifle. My groups got way more consistant. Another thing I noticed about the xmark trigger, the pull would be heavier sometimes, not consistant. How do you like your 5r otherwise? Mine's printing 5 shot groups averaging 5/8" with handloads or Federal gold medal match. Sweet shooter for a factory rifle. Consider getting a smith to smooth out that xmark at the least.

fdkay, being a tinkerer I'll sure enough flush it but I doubt it'll change anything as the trigger, other than being heavy, is very crisp and breaks cleanly.

mnshortdraw, I love my 5R, it is very accurate no matter what I feed it! I just wish the trigger was setable at the 2.5lb range so I can predict where it'll fall each and every time. Waiting for it to break makes me shoot fliers now and then increasing group sizes. And there's another thing I'd change on the rifle, give it a removable magazine.

I have a CZ in 6.5x55 with a trully adjustable set trigger. Now that's a very nice feature.

Same negative experiences with the trigger on the 5R. It was heavy from the factory- close to 6lbs(!).

Turned that screw out with no luck. It went down to maybe 5 lbs… cursed a bit. Then I realized it was a great excuse buy another toy.

Timney is in the mail.

Guys, my stock trigger without the set screw measures at 3lbs 5oz while full clockwise it jumps up to 6lbs. After removing the stock I could see no other adjustment screws that would allow one to reduce the trigger pull.

I spray cleanned it and removed the set screw so lets see if it gets better by firing before I order aftermarket. BTW how easy is it to remove and replace the trigger group?

My factory trigger was set around 4 pounds. After adjusting the screw out 2 full turns, the trigger is now at 2 pounds and breaks like glass. I'm pretty happy with the Xmark trigger group. Sure, a Timney or others might be better, but they should be for the additional cost .

pcschwenke, are you sure you're happy with a lousy 2lb trigger? I'd send the darn thing back to Remington and tell them what you really thought of them

Gcp- the trigger group is pretty easy to change out. You have to remove the barreled action from the stock. Then, there are two pins that you need to use a punch to drive out. Put the new one in line with the pin holes, and punch the pins back in. My 5r factory stock needed a tiny bit of dremel work to clear a stud on my Timney trigger, but I did the whole job in about 10 minutes. This was the first trigger swap on a Remington I have ever done, and I was able to figure it out by looking at it. Seems that people are having different luck with the factory triggers.

I don't have a gauge to check mine but from the factory my x-mark sucked on the .270wsm. I was able to get it lower and I like it now. The old style 700 trigger in my PSS is so much nicer though.

I am now safely down from 3lbs 11oz to 2lb 1oz by adjusting only the trigger pull screw. Great info exhange, thanks for all the pointers and I sure do hope this link helps others!!

Gang, I shot the rifle today, what a difference this little trigger pull change has made. I now LOVE this Remington trigger, and it was free to boot!
