Hello everyone, this will be my first custom rifle build. I just wanted to hear some opinions on this caliber and make sure the rifle I have is a good candidate for the build.

The rifle I have to use for this is a Kimber 8400 classic 30-06?

What length of barrel do you recommend and what twist, I plan on shooting the 140 grain berger vld?

Does anyone recommend a different caliber? I would like to hear any good or bad opinions about this caliber.

Thankyou very much for any advice.

Re: 6.5 284 norma build

Outstanding round, Very accurate, easy to load, great brass, the 140 Berger are awesome, but with all that greatness it wares out barrels FAST! Figure roughly 1000 rounds before you will need to replace the barrel.

I ran a 28", 1-9 twist. Some say to run a 1-8 for the 140 class bullets.

If I was looking at building a new 6.5 I would stay with a 260rem or a 6.5x47 lapua. Get roughly the same performance, with much better barrel life. When I say roughly, within 150fps if you run the 6.5-284 in the 2950 range.

Re: 6.5 284 norma build

just did one on a mod70 push feed short action had to open the box and extend the follower . the long action is a good idea i used a 26in 1 in 8 lilga and get 140 accubonds at .324" groups at 100yrds at 2988fps . the 140grn berger VLDs say on the box for 1 in 8 twist. if i was doing it again i would use a left twist to help cancel out some spin drift you are on the right track with the long action in the short action i do not have enough room for the vlds the scant ogive just will not fit my mag so i am settling on the accubond . but my 264 win mag with a 1 in 8 loves the vlds . load for the 6.5 284 is 51.5grns of rl17 cci 200 primers lapua brass coal 2.970 with 140grn accubonds
