Hey guys, ive been lurking around here for a few weeks mostly researching scopes and stocks for my new build im having done. I bought an FN SPR short action that is getting barreled with a 26' SS Douglas while im deployed. Im pretty certain ive got my scope figured out but im just not sure about the stock now. Im gonna spend most of my money on the scope so im gonna have to not spend as much on the stock. Are there any other stock makers out there other then McMillan or Manners? Id like to find the A3 style or something similar. If anybody has anything used they would sell PM me. Thanks.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Build

Hi Nate,

I have both McMillan and Manners stocks for the FN SPR actions and like them both. I have also considered a Bell & Carlson Medalist for an SPR build but I don't know yet if they make it for the heavy barrel contour SPR/M70. Maybe Wade "Gunner75" will tune in and let us know. He is very familiar with what B&C is making.

I have used a couple of Bell and Carlson stocks on recent builds and really like them. The Medalist is very similar to the HS Precision stocks with the aluminum block and such.

Also, the Hogue overmold with the full length bedding block is a good solid stock that helps deliver good accuracy. I have had these on the PBR XP's that have come in and they nice. The rubbery grip takes a little getting used to.

Take care and BE SAFE,
Darin

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Build

Ill check out the bell and carlson. When i bought this action i also bought a .308 SPR rifle that has the hogue stock with the aluminum block in it also. I do like the stock, but id really like to try something with an adjustable cheek piece. Im thinking i might try a little F-class competition if i can find something in my area around the 600 meter range. I thought about finding a factory Winchester coyote model stock and adding a cheek piece to that stock, but i dont really have the expertise for that.

How do you like your FN actions? Ive got a few Winchester Classics and am a real big fan of that design, thus the reason i went with that action. On both of my FN's though there where some wierd marks on the bottom of the back left where the bolt lug rides inside the action. It was right before the bridge at the rear. Does yours have and marks aswell? Im really excited about it and cant wait to shoot it when i get home and finish it up.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Build

Hi Nate,

I am not finding any marks on my receivers like you describe.

My preferences for the SPR are mostly a comparison to the Rem 700.

I REALLY like the SPR actions for a hunting gun, especially. I much prefer the 3 position safety that locks the firing pin compared to the Remington Safety. I like the fact you can load a longer OAL than you can with a Rem 700.

I think factory SPR trigger is great. I really like the OLDER stock Rem 700 triggers, especially with a Darrel Holland spring kit and a "Ruby Stoned" sear engagement. I ordered some SPR spring kits from Darrel Holland but have yet to install one of them. I can get the factory trigger down below 2 pounds with it passing the drop test each time I try it. I will increase the trigger weight before using one for hunting but I am pleased with the safe adjustability. Bottom line, in my opinion, the SPR trigger is just as good as the excellent older Rem 700 trigger.

Also, the price is GREAT as they are currently available from CDNN for $350. A comparable Remington package would run about $225 more than that to get the same accessories. I figure $350 for an action, $100 for one piece scope base and $125 for Williams bottom metal.

19Scout77 has posted about the excellent accuracy that his SPR's have. I hope when I get out to test mine that I will find similar results.

My .02,
Darin

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Build

CDNN is where i got mine. Nice to know about the trigger, im sure ill play with it once i get to messing with it. I looked into the Bell and Carlson stocks and they certainly look like an option. I have also found a factory Winchester Coyote model stock i may end up getting. Very excited to get home and start playing with it though!
