6br build

Hey guys, thinking of doing a build for a 6 br. Heres what I had in mind.Let me know what you think.

Action
Savage Target action. Not sure whether I want RBRP or RBLP, need to shoot RBLP and see how I like it.
Savage Arms

Barrel
Pac Nor 3 groove pre fit, chambered in 6br Norma. Either doing a straight cylinder or doing a straight taper from 1.12" at the action to 1" at the muzzle.

Stock
Bell and Carlson A5 Medalist Tactical. Barrel channel will most likely have to be opened up
Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist Style 5 Fully Adjustable - Remington 700 BDL (SPS, XCR, VTR) , Weatherby Mk V, Savage 10/12 - #2094, 2098, 6629, 2097

Other miscellaneous parts will include a fluted bolt from savage specialists and a larger bolt handle.

I was also thinking about filling the stock with 2 part expanding foam so it wouldn't sound hollow and would be more rigid. Any thoughts?

IMO:

Any old Savage action will do, a target action is not necessary, if anything I'd go with a Varmint action

Criterion Sav Varmint 6BR barrel (nothing against Pac-Nor)

I've owned two B&C Medalists for Savage, and neither remotely sounded "hollow" to me. Barrel inlet should be fine for a Sav varmint contour, if anything a deep well socket and some 60 or 100 grit and 5 minutes of your time will open 'er right up.

or put a wood dowel in the lathe, cut a slot in the dowel, put piece of 100 grit and hog it out till happy. and final cuts should be done by hand for a nice fit.

What is different about the varmint action? The target action has a large shank and the target accutrigger so I figured it would be a little better.

And the two part expanding foam is like the great stuff insulation filler you find in a can, except a little higher quality.
Sonic Crack, I think it is just the lockout sear on the accutrigger if I recall.

Varmint action has the target accutrigger and is small shank, which means greater availability of barrels. Its also a repeater, if you're into that kind of thing.

What's the purpose for the build? Target shooting? NRA KD? Tactical matches? Varminting? What's your intended range? The stock in the link doesn't have removable mag bottom metal. That will be another 3 bills to add. What's your budget? Scope? Brownell's has Remmy SA actions for sale $389.00. That's what I have in the pic below. CSS RTM stock, USO 5x25, SN3 T-PAL, Versa Pod bipod. Oh ya, it's a 6BR

Briggs sells lrp action, thats a repeater target action. A varmint accu trigger can barely get to 1.5 lbs and feel like garbage. The match trigger that is only on the target actions are pretty good when set at about 1 lb. If a br rig quality trigger is needed, get a rifle basix sav-2. I second the criterion selection . I have a 1-8 varmint contour 6 br criterion on a tact 10 action it will put 20 rds in a .422" group @100 off a bipod and beanbag prone, just stupid accurate and fast. 105 Berger hybrids at 2925.

As to your barrel, be sure to get a fast enough twist to stabilize the bullet you want to shoot. I personally would get a 7.5 or 8 twist to stabilize the 105-107gr bullets. I think you will find the thinner barrel profile to be plenty of barrel.
You may be surprised at how natural a right bolt left port gun feels once you get used to it.Your right hand never has to leave the bolt to reload if you are on a stable platform. It is very nice on a single shot target type action. Not as important on a repeater. The 6BR and it's derivatives like the 6 dasher are really accurate and fun to shoot.Performance just short of a 243 with 20-25% less powder.

The intended action is a single shot, no need for bottom metal. The purpose is to have a fun accurate rifle that I can hopefully take out to 1k or at least 600. I already have a Leupold Mark 4 8.5-25. Budget is as cheap as I can go for good quality parts.
6brshooter When looking at the barrels at NSS the criterion and shilen are roughly the same price. What makes the criterion better? I know they are button rifled, is it because they are a krieger subsidiary? Supposedly the match target accutrigger can get down to 6oz but most people put them at 1#. When I get an aftermarket trigger it will most likely be a SAV-2.

doesn't savage have a factory offering that basically fits this criteria except it has an HS stock? I'll have to check the webpage to get the model, but I know it is a single shot with right bolt/left eject, and has the quick twist in 6mmBR

edit: 12LRPV, 1-8" twist. seems to run $1,100-1,200 new

I don't think you'll lose anything in the way of accuracy with a repeater in either a tube or bedding block and it's so very much more versatile. My 26", 1 in 8 twist Braughton bbl. is aces out to 1K yards. I've shot it successfully in Across the Course, F-Class and Tactical matches.

I need the adjustable stock because my LOP is huge and I have high cheekbones which ends up with a low cheek weld. I don't know if the barrel on the stock savage is as good as the criterion or shilen either.
bolloxinaspanner I'll look into finding a varmint action, They have the large shank which I want for the larger barrel, and I will also have to invest in a trigger. If I can find one for less than 450 then it would be worth it.

I have or have had 5-6 criterion barrels. Still have all of them except 2 that i sold to buddies. I have found they shoot just as good as my Krieger and bartlien tubes, plus they seem to be pretty fast also. I have a 28" bull criterion on a savage fclass rifle, it loves 108 berger bt targets with 29.0 gr h4895. My other 6 br criterion is a varmint contour and it shoots just as good and gets out of the safe more then the fclass rifle. The other day had a couple friends over that are good shooters, at 640 yds in 5-10 fv wind, the 6 br tact. as i call it shot better and more consistently then a 338lm, 300 norma, 6.5x47, 260, 6.5 cm. The cm was a shilen barreled savage i sold and the lapua was factory 110 ba. The 300 norma, 260, and 6.5x47 were all 700 customs and the guy that shoots those runs in matches and probably aequal or better then me at trigger squeezing. My homemade br just shot smaller groups and hit smaller targets more consistently.

I've made up my mind then. Thank you for the help and input.
