Midway has two different 105 vld, part #24528 and #24429. Both claim a BC of .532. What's the difference?

Berger doesn't have the #24528 on their site, but they do have the #24429, but they rate them at .493.

What gives?

Re: 6mm Berger 105vld????

The hunting bullet has a slightly thicker jacket, that is all. The profile is the same. I've tried them both and they both shot the same, with the same POI.

So is it thinner or thicker???

Thicker would make more sense to me

The hunting bullet has a thinner jacket and slightly different shape than the target bullet. The hunting bullet has a G1 bc of 0.532 and the target bullet a G1 of 0.493

The hunting bullet has a thinner jacket and slightly different shape than the target bullet. The hunting bullet has a G1 bc of 0.532 and the target bullet a G1 of 0.493 </div></div>

The hunting bullet has a thinner jacket. The target bullet has a thicker jacket as it is not designed for expansion. Both the 105 hunting (#24528) and target (#24429) VLDs have a BC of .532. The 105 target BTHP (#24428) has a BC of .493. Same thing applied all of the 6mm and 6.5mm target and hunting VLDs. So long as they are the VLDs they are the going to shoot the same.

When my local supplier is in between orders and I have to use the target VLDs (I prefer the Hunting in case I run across a fox, coyote, trespasser...uh I mean crow, etc.) I use the exact same data as they also have the same sectional density of .254 in addition to the same outside dimensions. I have run around 2200 of them with about a 30/70 mix and can tell you for sure.

If still not sure contact Bryan Litz a Berger and he can verify it for you. They have a current PDF for all of their bullets you can download on the site that gives you every piece of info you will need for figuring your dope correctly, Boat tail length for figuring seating depth, the whole 9.

Hope this helps. Also, for those of you that aren't familiar with them, check out the OCW load development method and when you find the center of the shared POI, adjust your seating depth in and out with the VLDs. I see a few guys shooting out there that could cut there groups in half or better by adjusting in and out a small bit. Berger's site has a good explanation on how to hone in on the sweet spot.

In my daughters 6XC improved, the 105 wants a 20thou jump or 10thou jam and my wifes 6xc improved it wants kissing or 40 thou jump. Each rifle is slightly different.

Hope this helps some.

Re: 6mm Berger 105vld????

I have to disagree in regards to the 6mm line, the vld hunting and vld target versions are different, in other calibers the bc remains the same with the vlds. As per the berger website the vld target is 0.493 and the hunting vld is 0.532.

Re: 6mm Berger 105vld????

Where is Yutan by? Where do you shoot at? I am getting out of the Army here in a month or so and my family is from Battle Creek area and my wife is from North Platte. We went to college in Kearney. Hoping to find some matches in Nebraska. We may move to Nebraska still but I think we may go to Sioux Falls as the taxes are cheaper.

Re: 6mm Berger 105vld????

I stand corrected. It is the pdf quick reference file that needs updated. This is from Bryan:

Justin,

The 105 Target VLD has a different tip, and a different BC than the 105 Hunting VLD. Please see this bulletin for a full explanation:
http://02b0516.netsolhost.com/blog1/?p=81

The BC’s on the website are correct, the quick reference .pdf needs updated.

Sorry for the confusion,
-Bryan

Re: 6mm Berger 105vld????

Also pay attention to the lot number. The older target VLDs are the same. They had problems with the thicker jacket not matching up with the smaller punch and keeping consistency that Berger is known for so they changed to a larger punch which increased the meplat size thereby reducing the BC. The older lots are the same but the newer lots are reduced for the change in punches. The hunting VLDs are working great for me so that may be a work around. They are also working on a new design for the target VLDs but that process takes a while. Check out the info paper in the link Bryan sent me for the details.
Hope this helps someone from going to a match or having some headaches with a bullet with a different BC.
