7/08 Project is finnished...

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Good luck on your hunt!
Love the rifle, very slick little devil...

Also have a 7-08, in a lightweight hunter. 21" 5C, 12 twist for the light stuff. Varget gets a 120gr TSX or 120Vmax going 3K+ from that short barrel...

Lookin' forward to the critter shots too!

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Went to the range after work. 46grns of IMR4007 shot pretty well @ 2680 FPS, BUT all the loads I tried with it smoked a freight train! No go for me.

RL15 rocked, flat ass rocked. 42grns gave me 2640FPS(low ES/SD) and a 5shot group easily under .5MOA. By the time I let it cool down and shot another rifle the light faded enough that the chrono wouldnt read. 43grns flat ass hammered. Im mean a fucking bug hole. With what the 42 load clocked in at, its likely safe to say that the 43 grn load was hittin 2700FPS.

Its time to really work with Varget and RL15 and get this rifle really humming.

As a side Q have any of you necked up Lapua 243WIn brass for your 7/08? I did a few qick measurments and 7/08WIN brass and 243 Lapua brass have approx the same neck thickness. Im thinking of giving some a try. IMO, with the addition of Lapua brass, this rifle would really shine.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Nice rifle Issac! Sounds like it is shooting fairly decent too

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

I necked down .308 Lapua brass for mine...

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Some people dislike the Reloader powders, but they have always worked great for me.

Good going man!

Same here! Only thing I run into is they can be a smidge temp sensitive. Not terribly bad though.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

7RM, I shot 708 a long time, I had some of my best groups with 139/140BTs w/ IMR4064 and Varget. Loaded to hilt.

Factory 700V 24", set in an HS stock.

150 and 168 SMKs shot VERY well using Sierra's accuracy load, IIRC H380. 4895 is a good powder and a VERY well known shooter who is no longer with us, who had more knowledge than everyone I know combined preferred it. Bucky Murdock.

Anyway, I would not rule out 4320, various VV powders, though I never got to try them.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Ive got the load worked out.

Brass-
I ended up necking down BHM 308 brass. Prepped it very well, and has given very consitant results.

Bullets-
I was seemingly having a hard time getting desired resuts with the 162AMAXs. Erratic velocites and inconsistant groups. I figured I had my brass woes figured out, so I weighed the bullets. I came up with .8grn spread from lightest to heaviest. My test consisted of 15 bullets. I thought that was pretty pittiful, and was not going to sort bullets. So I grabbed a box of 168 Berger VLDs and weighed 15 of them. All came in at 168grns.

I basically started over with load devlopment. Tried RL17, '15, Varget, IMR4007, and H4350. Like with the 162s RL15, and Varget did very well, but with both powders I ran into some pressure before I got to the velocity I wanted. Enter H4350.... I loaded up to 48grns, which was a bit hot. 47.5 proved to be the best in all areas. Low ES/SDs. Outstanding accuracy.

The load is as follows-

7mm08 Rem
Necked down BHM 308Win brass
168 Berger VLD .010 in the lands
47.5 H4350
Fed210M
AVG 2711FPS via 22" Broughton.

Im quite happy with it. There will be definately more 7mm08s in my stable in the years to come.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Cool!

That's a good idea using that 308 brass.

Dang,Hornady sure screwed that lot of bullets up,didn't they!

Now if we can just get you to put about 5000 168gr Bergers down that barrel in the next couple weeks so we can see how well the barrel lasts,LOL.That way we can decide if we want to do 7-08 too.It would be nice to get high round count out of a barrel, high BC and decent velocity.

You got me thinking 7-08 now.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Very nice.... at sea level it looks supersonic to 1400, 9 mils to 1k with 2 mils of wind with a 10mph wind.

Beats a 139 scenar at 2850fps in the wind.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

What OAL are you running this load at? QL shows it to have alot of pressure and a pretty compressed charge. I know quickload is wrong from time to time though.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

It shows 110% load density, 73479 psi if I use the default "off the lands", if I use their corrected start pressure..84552 psi. Again, QL is sometimes way off.

Re: 7/08 Project is finnished...

Give some 175smk's a whack. Litz reports the G1 bc at 0.639, g7 at 0.327. I am also running a 708 with a 22" broughton. I am running the 175's at 2620 with varget. Tried some 162's had them around 2740 but the smk's shot better, and the smk's should have less wind drift.

JBM says it need .5 mil more elevation to 1k with the same 2 mils for wind.

168 actually beats it in energy at 1k.

Still runnin the H4350 with the 168 Bergers. Ive picked up some 145 Speer match bullets to try for some shorter range work. Havent had time to mess with it.
