Like to see pics and range reports of accuracy - esp from 200-600 yds.

Project in mind, a 20-22" 700 V contour - likely fluted, prob 9 twist if not swayed. Not opposed to 8 or 8.5 ROT but am set on 20-22" bbl.

Thoughts, slinging 120-162s. Use mainly paper and hunting and some informal steel perhaps, all to 600, do have option of a couple of ranges to 1K.

I currently roll my own for 98% of needs.

Pros/Cons

708 - brass and factory ammo easy to find

284 - performance increase, / not much factory ammo that I am aware of if needed

Is the Diff in speed worth going 284, given 20-22" bbl?

How is current 284 stamped brass and what is best 'out the box' brass?

Lastly, are ANY mods needed, to get 100% feeding w/ factory 700 bottom metal?

Thanks in advance for all replies and pics.

You'd be crazy to choose the 284:

At 600 yards, there's almost no difference whatsoever in trajectory/ wind. At 1000+, the 284 shows the 708 "what's up".

708 has plenty of energy for hunting at your specified ranges.

284 brass is usually hard to come by - currently its unobtanium.

284 hates a short barrel

708 doesn't mind a short barrel

9 twist will do the trick. So will 8 or 8.5. If I could pick my twist, it'd be 8.5, though I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 9 twist if the maker/contour/length was what I wanted.

Turbo 54 - your experience confirmed my gut, a 7/08 will be my choice. Since I will order a Cut rifle barrel, I may just go 8.5 just because, how heavy can a 20-22" stabilize sir? Figuring a 162 should do 2650-2700 w/select powders. Not sure I'd have any interest or need for more than an Amax for heavies.

Thanks much. Figured someone might suggest an AI but the '08 as is should be w/in 50 fps by my guess and insignificant in the field. I like K.I.S.S.

162gr is about the max size you'll be able to fit in your magazine. Magazine length is going to be your problem, not stabilizing. You could run 180's out of a 1-9 if you wanted to.

I had to get a notch milled in my action's feed ramp along with the aics front plate removal mod to seat those at a more reasonable length. 2650-2700 should be easy to hit out of a 22". Mines 24" and running the 162's just under 2800.

The 1:8.75" twist may cause problems with the lighter bullets you mentioned in your earlier post.

I had a 700V BDL that I chopped from 24 to 21, ran 100 Hornady, yes 100gr, at 200 yds, using 47 Varget RP partial sized brass, not sure on speed, guessing 3200-3300, shot one group of 3 shots, into 3/4" at 200 yds, another 7/8s, I was surprised, but it did it using a 4-14x40 AO tactical in good conditions. Think they had a 9 1/4 Twist. FWIW, 120s clocked 3100-3150 and 140s 2900-2960. All Varget.

Don't expect to run lighter than 120s. Never had any big issues twisting too fast for light bullets, but seen rifles that lacked enough spin for heavier slugs.

There was alot of talk about 7CM
284 like performance works fine from S/A so they say

If true that would be way to go vs 7-08

From what I remember it required a fairly long barrel and most were Melonite coated as well.

Nice rifles guys, tell me about the accuracy you are seeing from 200-600.

Thanks for replies.

I took mine out to 700 today, most were grouped under 6" on steel. I made a few bad wind calls, and made few bad trigger pulls too... Definitely not the rifles fault, and not bad for factory tube.

I shoot very few groups at any range after I get a load established, but before the last match I shot this rifle at, I did shoot a group at
400 on steel. Slightly less than 1.5". That was at the 3500ish mark on the tube. It still hammers now. Love the chambering.

Not sure what you're hunting, but why not consider 260 Remington? The .308's capacity is probably better suited to 6.5 (and even 6) mm than 7. Just a thought.

I've only taken mine out to 400 and accuracy has been more than pleasant.

Owned several custom 6BRs, 260s, and many 708s, but no custom 7s. Have a custom action w/serial number that matches a 7 bore size, only fitting it gets a 7 tube ;)

Not a comp or Tac shooter, just informal and hunting, nothing against the 260, love the round and still own one now.

Nortex - Nice rifle sir, thanks for the post and what powder btw are you running under Amax? Thanks for replies all.

Thanks sir, it was my Go To in past w/100-140s, never shot much heavier, in the past, but like the Amax ;)

Good accuracy reports, 7RM what powder are you running?

Jordan - Nice 284 above. Thanks all.
