7 saum

advice required please.

I’ve got my 7 SAUM build on a BAT with factory adjusted feed ramp and with the MDT SAUM magazine I can load to 2.95 OAL. 27” barrel.

I am planning on hunting with some longer range shot on some hard to approach deer. Not big deer in fact very small compared to North American species.

I think instead of the burgers I have I’m going to pick up some Hornady ELD-X. So my question is

162gr ELD-X or 175 ELD-X?

Will I be eating into my powder volume with the longer bullets? Or should I just go with the 162gr ELD-X? I might even consider the 180gr ELD-M as it’s a softer bullet for the smaller deer.

That 180 is a big bullet, it's not gonna work to good at the mag length you have. For a strait short action SAUM the 162 is a hard bullet to beat in my opinion. Good BC that you can run hard and kills just about everything.

Definitely ditch the bergers for hunting. The 168 Barnes lrx is a hard hitting bullet also and worth looking at. I load the 175 eldx and the 168 lrx but in a Sherman so probably a little different then what you need to accomplish with the saum. Just now developing the Sherman so no real info to share yet.

The 162 is the perfect bullet for the 2.95 coal. 166 ATIP as well and I would do the 162 ELD-M rather than the ELD-X.

I know every barrel is different, but does anybody have a general idea of speed and Powder charge (H4350, H4831sc and possibly N565) with 180 ELDM I could start at with a 24” Proof CF in a SA Origin?

Definitely H4831sc for the 180s. H4530 is what I use for the 150s.
Short action will limit you but say you load at 2.950" coal with the 180 ELD-M. 58-59gr H4831 with 59gr being your max. That will run you 59.7K - 63K PSI in Quickload. 2800-2850 FPS. Start at 57.5 and work your way up.
Guaranteed you'll find something 1/2 moa or better with that combo.
I run 60.0 H4831sc with the 166 ATIPs and 60.5 H4831sc with the 162 ELD-M at 2.950" in a short action. It's a 1/4-3/8 moa 5 round group. My Scenar-L 150 load is actually even more accurate but that's just for paper shooting.
You'll see some guys running as much as 61gr with the ELD-M but that's for an XM action loading at 3.1in or longer. Be careful not to duplicate these loads or you'll definitely run into over pressure.
Good luck

I used 180 ELDM with N565 for first 100 rounds of break in just at mag length. (Never measured the jump)
Rounds 1 to 50 was 60.0 grains for 2670
Rounds 50 to 75 was 61.0 Grains for 2700
Rounds 75 to 100 was 62.0 grains for 2805

Impact Short Action 26" Bartlein (SAMMI spec on chamber) and planned to run 166 A-Tip.

All N565 (don't forget your drop tube):
Excited for the 166 A-Tip and Berger 180 Hybrid, but ended with 190 A-Tip
Current load is 190 A-Tip with 61.9 grains at .080 jump for 2805
My 166 A-Tip load is 63.8 grains for 2961 at 0.080 jump
My 180 Hybrid load is 62.2 grains for 2867 at 0.60 jump. (catches in the mag sometimes)

I get 2984 with 180 bergers with N560. I’d assume you could get 2900 with the 180 eld. I also run a SA origin but with an xcaliber steel barrel and this is with a can as a well.

24" proof on a SA.
First tried H4831 with 168 vld hunters. Velocity was not where I wanted it to be.

Moved to H4350 and 162 ELD-M'S. Max load got me 2860 with no pressure.

Loaded H1000 with 168's and made it to max (67 grains) although super compressed. Found a good load at 66.2. Average was 3032 and .497" 4 round group.

What is everyone's experience running about 3000 fps and brass life?

I was running the 143 hammer hunters at 3230fps (60grs of 4350). It is a stupid accurate load but primmer pockets went quick.

Now I’m running them with 58 grs of 4350 running at 3075 and I’m not running into any issues with the brass.

Riffle set up:
Impact Titan (SA)
Proof 24” (gunsmith chambered)
Manners LRH
TT diamond
Ultra 7 can

Finally got a chance to run out real quick and put 10 rounds down the barrel just to check pressure and speed.
I loaded 6 rounds of H4831sc and 4 rounds of H4350 with 180 ELDM at .020 off lands.
No pressure signs whatsoever, but don't really care to go much higher/ faster than 2837.
I know the barrel will break in and speed up a bit but not looking for crazy speed.
I just want consistency and accuracy as this will be my long range Elk and Deer rifle.

Thank you for this link, I have managed to purchase a few boxes.

Is it found ADG has a lower capacity than Norma?
I can't tell you about capacity but it is much harder than the Norma brass. I would caution you about not neck turning as the last batches of ADG have had pretty thick necks and could lead to some pressure spikes.

Thank you but current rifle as a .321 no turn neck and was to run 300 SAUM brass necked down no turn required.

I have a bartlein carbon barrel ready to be spun up should the current barrel be toast.

7mm SAUM Norma brass is £180/50 when and if it comes in stock. I’m lucky that this Adg Brass is being shipped to the U.K.

The 7mm SAUM is the underdog in the 7mm’s.

If I can get 180’s to 2900fps and 162’s to 3000fps I’ll be very happy.

I bought a 6.5 barrel at the same time. As I know barrels will be hard to come by in the future with suspected price rises in coming. That will be a 6.5 PRC running 147’s at 3000fps but that will be for another thread 😁

Look at the 6.5 Gap/Saum, it will leave a PRC in the dust. There has been a bunch of ADG 6.5 saum brass available lately. I currently have 2 6.5 Gap/Saum rifles and 1- 7 Saum out of the 4 that Ive done. I once had a PRC. Don't miss it and one coming to me that needs to have some apparent issues corrected.

I’ll stick with PRC this side of the pond. Getting reamers is becoming a pain at the best of times. I’ve got another 26” tube so won’t give up too much to the 6.5 SAUM. Factory lapua brass is far cheaper than ADG brass as well.

Running the ballistics the 7mm and 6.5’s really are running neck and neck. Maybe less barrel life in the PRC but also less recoil. I won’t be needing the heavies on the smaller species of deer we have. I’ve got a few years of fun in hand.

KMW Sentinal with Bat VR action. Bit of a heavy hunter and different to my AIAX. Hence wanting to reach out…
