Hi Guys.

New to the site. I recently purchased a B.O. bolt knob for my 700 and have a machinist friend to turn down the handle. I am new to the tactical rifle scene, and was curious if there was any significant strength benefit by going through the extra work of reaming the knob out for a 3/8"-24 thread? Or, will the bolt handle turned down to 5/16" take quite a bit of abuse?

Thanks.

It is probably not a good idea of turning down the factory handle. I have repaired over 200 that have been done that way and broke off. You might want to check around the site here and see who can do a better install for you.

But who am to say;)

RBoomK,
Look up AZPrecision here on the hide. Keith has done a lot of bolt knobs for everyone here on the hide. He did mine and it looks great. As a matter of fact he has a thread in Optics and accessories you can look at with lots of pics. Plus he has a special going on as well, look under the commercial sales section.

hey mike, of the ones you repaired, were they threaded all the way to the shoulder? i am wondering if my method of stopping the threads .150" (changing to .25" for my knobs being made now) from the shoulder is going to be enough to keep them from breaking due to a stress concentration.

Re: 700 Bolt Knob Install

Not trying to discourage you, but if you have any doubt, send it to AZ Precision. He does not charge a lot and you will have peace of mind knowing it was done by someone that has done a BUNCH of them.

Re: 700 Bolt Knob Install

Thanks a lot for the info guys. I really appreciate it. The bolt is going to be shipped to AZ Precision for the mod.

Re: 700 Bolt Knob Install

Any of the guys on here can do a good job. There are lots of pictures around for you to view. Take a look at as many as you can find, and decide.
All the methods of install work fine and have an advantage.
The Tac Ops stud if welded is the strongest in my opinion.
I believe a 10-32 stud installed the way we do is stronger than a 5/16x24 cut handle, but I don't think you'd ever break either one. And if the 5/16x24 way breaks, it's an easy fix with a stud. We can do it easy.

So don't worry about the install method as long as someone on here does it. Get the knob you like the most.
