As the title states I need some help with 7mm mag 168 smk retumbo load data. I am loading for an older 116 savage weather warrior for whatever reason it is factory equipped with a 22 inch barrel including muzzle brake.

I will be using federal brass 215 m primers 168 gr sierra match kings and retumbo

Thanks

What's the purpose of the round, hunting...target?

How far are you intending to shoot with this combo?

I've not used Retumbo, but it's a good powder for the heavies in 7mm.

22" barrel negates some of the gains, but again, what are you intending to do with this load?

Re: 7mm rem mag 168 smk retumbo load data

I am new to longer range shooting I have had this gun in the safe for a while, so I decided to see what kind of accuracy I could get out of it and start to work on long range skills in conjuction with a .22 trainer. I realize I will probably want to rebarrel at some time. I may also decide to do a lr hunting load at some time as the smk is not ideal for this

Thanks

Re: 7mm rem mag 168 smk retumbo load data

I shoot Barnes TSX 160's with 68 grains of Retumbo out of my Remington 7mag and am hitting the same hole at 100 yards.
I know this isn't the same bullet you are shooting but just an FYI if you want to try another round.

168 Berger VLD for me also. 72g was the sweet spot in an old remmy, might go more without pressure but accuracy suffered. 2980-3000 & moa. Work up. My old gun has a LOT of throat out there and I load em long. Good luck.

Re: 7mm rem mag 168 smk retumbo load data

I am working on 7mmRemMag this week.

Right now I am between 68 and 70 gr Re22 with 180 gr VLD moly.

Alliant's published load is 61 gr Re22 with 175 gr.
I am running 7 - 9 gr above Alliant's load.

You guys with 168 gr 70 -72 gr Retumbo.
You are 3 - 5 gr below Hodgdon's 75 gr Retumbo 170 gr
http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

I am working up to loose primer pockets and then backing off.
What are you guys using as pressure sign to end the work up?

Re: 7mm rem mag 168 smk retumbo load data

My 71.5gr Retumbo/168 VLD load is just where I found the best accuracy. It's running right at 3000fps and I'm content with that. Accuracy began to deteriorate above that velocity for me.

73.5gr of Retumbo gave me significant ejector marks in my long throated 7RM. In your Hodgdon link, I'm seeing 68.0gr as max for Retumbo using 175 Partitions.

Must be a typo or something to do with the bullet profile. The 162gr load is only 73.5gr max. I'm loading 71.5gr of Retumbo with a 175smk at 3.40, which is 3.5 gr over listed max. I'm crunching powder, so not much room left. I'm thinking I pushed it up over 72gr, but it got kind of erratic with odd fliers. Be careful with some of this data you find on these forums, guys (including mine).

I worked up from 69 grains and found signs of pressure well before the max of 75.0. Firm bolt lift flow into the firing pin hole larger pressure ring than factory loadings.

Unfortunately I also had a scope issue. not much data was gather on this test other than pressure tolerance. I have another set of loads ready to got just got to find the time. I'll post results as they are available.
