I'm new to this site and am eager to hear your input. I'm having an 7mm saum built for F Class competition. I will have a 1:8 twist for Berger 195's and Sierra 197's. My question is What would be the optimal barrel length?
I'm running a 180 at 2900fps from a 24" Barrel. Berger estimates a velocity loss of 31fps per inch of barrel for the 7 saum. So a 30" barrel may get me to around 3050fps. Hopefully you're using a long action, I'm using a short and I would almost have to single load to use the 195's. But I'd say the heaviest 28-30" barrel you can use.
For F-Class I'd run a 30" or 32", truck axle profile. I run a 32" for a 280AI and will set it back to 30" when the time is right. Just monitor the throat wear carefully, it has world championship winning accuracy, but it will also burn through barrels without a second thought.
Most won't believe it, but certain powders can produce excellent velocity from short barrels. Great for hunting, but no reason to limit yourself in Fclass , go for the longest truck axle that you can
