I'm reconfiguring my 7-08 silhouette gun into a precision platform (possibly).

The smith that built it used a low round count XX Douglas barrel, but I never asked him what twist it was. I checked a couple days ago finally, and it seems 1:9.5 or 10.

Will this stabilize 162 Amax's at distance? I only went up to 150gr Nosler BT's for the steel critters, but the driving force in making it a precision rifle would be to utilize the higher BC Amax's.

Re: 7mm twist question

Thank you sir, I think if the recommended twist for a 168 Berger VLD is 1:10, then a 162 Amax should be fine!

Now I just need to see how fast I can get them going from an AICS mag length load, hopefully utilizing the IMR4895 I have on hand. Hopefully 2700'll be doable.

Re: 7mm twist question

I would be interested to know how it turns out.

I'm getting 2710fps at 70 degrees with a 180 JLK VLD using Varget in a 24" .308, and it's stable from a 12-twist.

So, I would think you could get 2800fps from a 162gr AMAX in 7-08.

Re: 7mm twist question

It may be a while before I get the transition made and some load development done, but I'll be sure to share my results.
Just wish the bottom hadn't fallen out at work, quickload would come in handy for this project.
