So I have recently become an unemployed TIG welder and I'm having no luck at finding a new job. I have decided that production welding for mediocre pay isn't worth my time and skill, and not to mention my eyesight. So I'm enlisting in the Army and was thinking of going 91F formerly known as 45B Small arms/artillery repairer.

I was wondering if anyone has more insight about this MOS other than this cheesy video?

That seems cool and all, but if I was going army, I'd go 46 Romeo.

Its essentially the same job I've got in the AF, i'd just fall under the 55th signal corp, and still be a combat cameraman.

Combat Arms. Not camera.

Combat Arms is pretty much the same thing in the Air Force. But we also train how to use the guns. I love the job.

Sounds like a good plan, if you find out that the Army is a good fit for you and you want to make a career out of it I would recommend putting in about 8 years or so in that MOS then work on becoming a Warrant Officer doing the same job, pay is better and people will actually listen to you lol.

Re: 91F MOS? Small arms repair.

+1 on WO. I served a bit over six years enlisted to learn my craft. Had I stayed for 20 or more, Warrant Officer is where I would have looked. The warrants that I knew had their stuff wrapped tight. I considered them "commissioned specialists."

Re: 91F MOS? Small arms repair.

Just a hint, if you go that route, I also would look into attending the NG's National Match Armor's school. They do (or did) allow regular Army guys to attend. They have two schools, one for rifles, one for pistols. They teach you to take a arms room rifle and pistols and turn them into quality match guns.

The RA may have such a program, but if I remember right, it was easier to get a slot in the NG Course.

I took the Small Arms Repair course but screwed up and went to OCS before getting into the NG NM Course. (They only take enlisted and WO, not officers).

Re: 91F MOS? Small arms repair.

I want to add a few ideas. I am Active US Army, as a 91x40 currently deployed to OEF. I have ran shops / been in charge of the armament repair sections, formerly 45B now 91F as a Motor Sergeant, most of the time you would fall under the motorpool section.

I will say as JR Enlisted the roles/ responsibilities are very limited. You will be trained on multiple weapons systems to repair, all very briefly.. Only as career/ OJT experience will you become proficient in any weapons system.
You will be expected to have the knowledge to repair everything from a m16/m4 to a m777 155 howitzer, so your jobs may very as will your knowledge base. The level of repair at the lower levels of JR Enlisted( big repairs still get passed to higher levels of maintenance)will be limited and you may find yourself wasting time doing things like replacing a bent sight on an M4 or doing simple crap as replacing a barrel on a M9.
If you are mainly looking into something for gunsmith type work, I would seriously look into becoming a machinist/ welder as they have access to the mills/ lathes.
On a side note.. Many of the 91 series MOS are over strength at the E5 and below levels, they are being forced to reclass at this time to reenlist.
If you are serious about enlisting I would honestly say evaluate your options, elnistment is getting more strict, MOS openings are getting harder as the Army is starting a large downsize soon.

Lastly If you are dead set on 91F, you will want to do everything you can legally to make rank quick, organize your college/ technical transcripts before seeing a recruiter( may be eligible to come in an E4) and just about any college ed will help you. I stroingly advise even if you plan to stay in a few years look at Warrant, it is the best of both worlds but you must be an E5 promotable with ALC to drop your packet

Good Luck

If you need advice PM me I will try and get you straight answers FAST

I was thinking more along the lines of a hand-made Japanese Katana....a "killer" weapon!
