Heres what I'm looking at doing:

Trued 700 action
xmark trigger
hs precision 700p style stock
Hart 20" barrel, 1.25" all the way to the muzzle.
Maybe a muzzle brake. Not sure yet.
Badger trigger guard

Does this sound like a good setup?

The only other change I Might make is to go to a 6.5 Creedmoor.

Sound like a winner to me. Remingtons 700's are great especially
if you want to hit the aftermarket parts. Do you allready have an
existing 700?

Why the truck axle?

Re: 99% Sure this will be my .260 build

Excellent caliber. Reduce the barrel diameter or flute it. No need for a straight taper which will make it off balance. All that good stuff with an xmark trigger? Get a Jewell. It's well worth it.

Re: 99% Sure this will be my .260 build

My first custom rifle was a 7mm Rem mag with a 26"ish 1.250 fluted tube. Learned a valuable lesson there. The rifle on the plus side had very minor recoil but on the downside was freakin heavy.

Here's how I'd run it;

Trued 700 action
Badger Knob
After Market PTG Lug
Jewell HVR Trigger
McMillan or Manners Stock
#18 Krieger or #8 Bartlien finished at 26"
1-8.5 Twist
Badger M5 or Surgeon DBM

That's a much better suggestion!

Re: 99% Sure this will be my .260 build

this is going to be my next build too. I found a 5R .308 that I'll be using for my base rifle. I was wondering what to do for a barrel so thanks for the advice mnroscoe...

Gotta agree with something similar to this. I have no love for the x-mark trigger. I have played around with about 5 of them now and none of them come close to a Jewell or Timney trigger IMO. Forget the brake also. You will not need it. 260's just don't recoil that much.

Re: 99% Sure this will be my .260 build

I picked the 1.25 straight because of the rigidity... Less harmonics and therefore less sensitive to differences in powder charge. (based on 6mmbr.com info)

reason for 20" is because I wont ever shoot past MAYBE 400 yards with this gun so I don't need velocity and it'll keep the weight down for this thick barrel. Also mentioned in the 6mmbr article is that shorter barrels are more rigid as well.

Weight isn't a huge issue with this rifle either. The place i hunt doesn't require any walking or much movement and at the range itll be on a bipod.

Badger knob will be there, but I'm going to do that myself.
The trigger I'm still on the fence.... Im not too sensitive on triggers but we'll see. Trying to build a more affordable but still accurate rifle and the added $200 for the trigger might not make enough difference to me to justify it.

My next rifle.. probably a .270WSM or 7mmWSM or 7mm SAUM will be a fully decked out rifle with the best of everything. So no need to spend a lot on this one just yet is what I'm thinking to myself.

Re: 99% Sure this will be my .260 build

I ran a 1.250" straight on a 6BR...........30" at that. The gun shot great but, never stellar. When I went to a #17 finished at 27" it would put 10 rounds into a group that could be covered with a dime...............at 330 yards.

The 1.250" is OK but, it's way too much barrel for a rifle that will be used in field conditions. The other thing I noticed was the recoil balance was off and the rifle was nose heavy.

The #18 Krieger or #8 Bartlien (same thing) is the heaviest I'd go for a field type rifle and a #17 is the heaviest I'd go for a Bench/Bag/BR Rifle. The Heavy & Standard Palma Barrels, #14 & #15 Krieger, are also a great way to go for field type rifles.

Re: 99% Sure this will be my .260 build

One thing about a brake, it reduces muzzle flip, which allows helps you spot your hits. Although with a bull barrel, there will be so much weight out there that you might not have much muzzle flip. You certainly don't need it for recoil. And it might help with the muzzle flip. If you want a brake that reduces muzzle flip, get on that has no ports on the bottom. They are best for not throwing up a lot of dust also.

Re: 99% Sure this will be my .260 build

I scored a savage action with a 26" douglas 1.05" no taper barrel already installed. I got such a good deal I didn't even pay attention to the barrel taper. When the barreled action showed up at my FFL I was a little suprised. It looks cool but when I finally get her into a stock(xlr chassis) I know its gonna be nose heavy.

Do what you will but after seeing so many guns here on the hide shoot lights out with much less weight I'd look at something a little lighter.

P.S. My barreled action, no base/rings/scope weights over 10 lbs. if my bathroom scale is correct. Add all that and a xlr chassis and I'm going be looking at about 16 lbs. Way too heavy!
