I have had my chronograph for a while now and my wallet has instructed me to play with pistol for a while.

I want to build some ammo to match my defensive loads for power. Would have never attempted this without the chrono. I'm assuming that I can't just go off pressure signs on the brass so I'm looking for guidance on how to interpret chrono readings during development.

I plan to chrono WWB 115gr, Winchester NATO 124gr, Speer Gold Dot 124gr, and Winchester PDX1 124gr +p. During the same range trip I will also chrono a load workup to the maximum book value using 124gr XTP's over HP-38 in Winchester range pickup brass.

I'm not so concerned with the book value as I am with the possibility that matching defensive loads may require going above book value.

Judging from the PDX1 being marked +P, I'm not expecting to stay under book max.

Any tips would be much appreciated. How will I know if I need a different powder than HP-38 to achieve velocity goals?
