The Sig Sauer P226 is one of the most popular semi-automatic 9mm handguns available today. Fans of Sig handguns are in love with the build quality and all metal construction. Detractors point to the lack of an external safety as a negative, since it is not advised to carry it in a "cocked and locked" configuration which a double action/single action trigger configuration with an external safety allows for. Another "down side" is the placement of the slide release, which is fairly far back, thus requiring the user to take particularly care not to let his thumb hit or rest against in order to prevent the slide from locking back on the last round being discharged from the magazine. In terms of accuracy, it is very easily brought on target. Trigger options are available, including the installation of a shorter reset trigger system.

Here is a video on the P226:

As with any firearm, practice will overcome the nuances of a particular platform. I shoot a 226 on a regular basis and have never had an errant slide lock because of my thumb...but I place my right thumb OVER my left hand in a thumbs forward grip. The DA/SA is probably the biggest reason that many shy away from the Sig. Again, practice, practice, practice and then more practice. I taught my wife to shoot Sigs and she only shot DA (Double Action) for the first 300 rounds when learning. Now, DA is just a part of her shooting.

Let me add that my 226 has put over 12,000 rounds downrange without a single malfunction of any kind. I have other Sigs without the round count but all of them have been just as reliable.
