I really like the sticky at the top of this forum for doing OAL determinations.

I'm working up 2 hunting loads for my 308 VLS, one is Hornaday GMX 150s the other is for GK165 HPBT. Just touching the lands the 150 has OAL is 2.934, the 165 the OAL is 2.805, the difference is the plastick ballistic tip on the 150. Measure both bullets and the 150 is longer.

The system posted above with a cleaning rod and a couple of clamps works like a dream. Once I get the measurement I make up a dummy round at the correct length mark it with it's length, and save it to set up my seating die. Keep the sizing rounds at the reloading bench and check 'em before and after you set up the dies, but it's working for me.

The ogive (where the bullet gets wide enough to engage the lands) is different from one bullet style to the next, that's why the OAL is so diferent.

The clasing rod method works OK, but treat yourself to a Hornady OAL Comparator and headspace comparator if you plan on reloading much.
