Sorry if this has been asked over and over, but I'm getting ready to buy a rifle in 308 Narrowed down to 700ltr 700 5r, and the 700xcr long range tactical, or compact. I'll be shooting 500 meters, my range can be a little windy at times. What are your opinions. Will 20" work, or should I go all the way to 24 or 26 inch. and does anyone have an opinion, on the 700 pss dm.

Re: A little help on bolt gun choice

Go with the 5R, I have 2 and they shoot great out of the box. I also have a GAP/Longrifles custom that is 16", since i got it back a couple of weeks ago I took a small deer at 300+ yards on a fairly windy day with no problem.

This is just my experience, but im sure some of the more seasoned shooters will be able to point you in a good direction.

Re: A little help on bolt gun choice

Go with the 5R and you can always upgrade it. Upgrades such as bedding/trigger tuned or replaced. You can even have a DBM inletted for it if you prefer to stick with the HS Precision stock.

A 20" barrel will do what you are asking w/o problem, but the 5R seems to be a better gun right out of the box. If you go with the 5R you could shorten the barrel/have it threaded and or add a brake if needed.

just picked up my 5r 20 inch threaded barrel, this is the problem with having your local gunshop always having just about everything.
