A rimfire summers journey

Attending an Applseed shoot this summer with my daughter got me back to the range after a 20yr absence. I rediscovered my 308 and long range shooting. Looking for cheaper trigger time I started shooting my 22 at 100 yards.

I thought it might be interested to share the journey and changes to my 10/22 and the resulting accuracy changes. All scores are referenced are the average of at least 5 targets all shot at 100 yards

215 0f 250......Stock 10/22 carbine with laminate stock circa 2002
221 of 250......Clark triger group
224 of 250 ....... 24' fluted clark barrel
233 of 250 ....... 1,500 rounds of drills and coaching. No matter what, at this point I could not prevent fliers into the 6 ring in random directions
241 of 250 ........bolt pinned and radiused, barrel threaded to rediever, 11 degree target crown and match chamber by Randy at CPC

The biggest changes came from training and trigger time, no surprises here right!!

All of the technical changes to the 10/22 improved consistency. The bigest changes came from the trigger work, and the bolt work by Randy has eliminated the random 2 inch flier.

Re: A rimfire summers journey

Good post! It's good to track the progress of the changes you made as you shot your rifle. I don't keep records like that. I should, but I don't. I just make a change & if it's better I go on to the next phase if it is needed. Before long, I won't even remember the things I do.
It's HELL to get old!

Re: A rimfire summers journey

I work as a choach/trainer in my 'real' life so tend to want to know why things are getting better or worse.

The tough part is knowing that any further improvements are up to me!

Which barrel are you using now?

Did Randy @ CPC also polish your bolt or modify the top rear of the hammer?

Re: A rimfire summers journey

Randy at CPC performed the following. Check his website or email him for more details he is the expert I am just the consumer.

I left the Clark barrel on and let Randy work his magic with a stock reciever/bolt and a Clark trigger group.

RECIEVER/BARREL WORK
Setback breech end by .187 to .250". Shorten chamber, recut barrel shank oversize to fit receiver hole perfectly.

CPC semi-auto match freebore chamber reams until a Winchester Power Point, Eley, or CCI bullet lightly sticks. These are used as gauges since all .22 L.R.s will work except some longer .22 Hyper-velocity's.

Chamber polish, Recut extractor groove, Fit new spacer into barrel's lock cut
Cut new 11° recessed target crown, Stone slide area in receiver, Recut and square .920 dia. c'bore on receiver face, Barrel was also threaded into the reciever.

BOLT WORK
Bolt is totally disassembled, cleaned, deburred, Bolt face is surface ground and squared to .0425" LR rim headspace depth; same as bolt action rifle for accuracy and reduced flyers, Bolt side was polished and blackened, A hole is E.D.M.'ed and a stainless dowel pin pressed in over the front of the firing pin to hold it from raising up, reducing flyers and to get more consistent firing pin strikes.

Groups tightened up and way more consistent after this work. Prior to this work I consistently had 2-3 fliers into the 6 ring at 100yards for each 25 round group.

If i had to do it over again I would prioritize wher/what order to spend money on a 10/22 build.
1 quality barrel.
2 Tight chamber, correct head space.
3 pin above the firing pin, bolt radiused and polished
4 quality optics
5 trigger work
6 stock

Re: A rimfire summers journey

thanks for the information. i recently bought a 10/22 and was not pleased with the accuracy at 50 yards.....1.25-1.5 inches. so far all i've done is add a Kidd barrel(and a couple of trigger parts)...that got the groups down to dime size. i hope the addition of a Kidd trigger and bolt will improve my rifle as much as a trigger and bolt improved yours. i'm still working on the 1500 rounds down range part.

again, thanks
