Hello.

I searched all the forums and couldn't find a specific answer to this question. I've got a Remington 5R that has the factory stock and it shoots really well, sub 1/2 MOA consistently...i'd like to keep it that way. I changed out the bottom metal today with H-S stuff and I need torque specs and the order I should torque the action screws. Everywhere I read it says 65 in/lbs but nothing about if that is good for a 5R with a plain stock. Also, what order should a guy tighten the action screws? Any specific techniques I should know?

Thanks in advance.

No they are not. Factory specs with factory bottom metal is 45 to 50.

Badger type bottom metal and the like spec to 65 inch pound because the bottom metal is heavy duty.

That being said most will torque factory bottom metal to 65 but be aware this much torque on factory bottom metal can and does split the bottom metal at the action screw hole.

To the OP if with the HS stuff you should be good to 65 but that's not to say your rifle will or won't like it. Not every rifle likes one specific torque value or even the same value on both screws, finding what works for your rifle is up to you.

Any specific order on tightening? Way I did it was tap the butt on the ground to make sure the action was seated in the stock, then work my way back and forth between the action screws until I got to 65 inch pounds.

By the way, thanks for the responses....

Thats how I've always done it.

On a side note; what stock pack is that? Custom?

Re: Action screw torque specs for Rem 5R & Order

I usually torque in increments of 20-40-65.
I don't concern myself with order, but if I retorque whichever one I started with, for example, if I torque the forward screw first I torque forward, rear and forwars again for all three increments.

+1 on above posts with one addition.

Torque wrench selection - incremental torque is the reason I prefer a dial indicator type torque wrench for precision work.

Also, ensure the torque wrench is meeting specifications by periodic calibration. There are calibration labs that conduct such tests.

FWIW, I torque my Remington to 55 in lbs. Factory bottom metal, and I've seen good results thusfar. The incremental torque is definitely a good idea, and I usually hand-tighten loosely until snug, working back and forth between the front and rear, then use a calibrated torque wrench.

The only direction you should turn those junk arsed bolts is counterclockwise.
Once they fall out, leave them on the ground where they fall.
Now go get some high quality bolts.
Yes, I know exactly what kind of bolts aftermarket bottom metal comes with...junk.

NAS #'s are LS8704-4-12 for button head style and LS8756-4-23 for flush head style. You will probably have to trim a slight amount depending on stock config.
These numbers are for military aerospace 17-4PH precision ground stainless. If you have the money floating around I have the numbers for titanium, inconel, and a few special tools steel alloys.
You can also spec them from SPS or ARP in any head style you can possibly imagine.

Don't waste time with junk bolts....you spent all that time making sure the bedding is correct and then allow stuff to move around due to poor holding ????

Re: Action screw torque specs for Rem 5R & Order

Putting 65 in lbs on a factory bottom metal is too much. It may not crack at the moment, but it is possible due to the stress on it. I have been told 30-40 in lbs on the factory. A Remington rep told me that. Who knows!!

I had a Remington gunsmith tell me over a year or so ago to just hand tighten the bolts. I don't know what his hand tighten bolts equals to in lbs, but I've tighten my factory bottom with a HS Precision to 35-40 in lbs and didn't have a problem. The rifle was a tack driver.

My apologies for bringing this tread back from the grave, but the google search doesn't care about the age of threads. I would also like to know what stock pack that is if anyone recognises it.
