Action wrench help

I’m looking to buy an action wrench. All of my stuff has integral rails (Defiance and Impact). I’m looking at either Defiance type wrench, Surgeon or Brownells clamp style. I shoot lefty but have a couple of right handed rifles so I like the idea of the Defiance and Brownells being ambidextrous. The Surgeon is almost half the money which means I can buy a right handed and left handed version for not much more. It’s close enough I consider it a wash.

I’m more interested in what your take is on torquing at the ejection port with the Surgeon or closer to the threads with the Defiance. Or do they both place torque in about the same place in the action? With the amount of torque being applied does it really matter? I don’t see myself ever trying to remove a factory Remington barrel or anything that requires tons of force.

What about the Brownells clamp style wrench? Will it work with an integral Picatinny rail?

I probably won’t be using them very often but would like the freedom to switch between a few barrels that have been pre headspaced to that particular action.

I’ve already got a viper barrel vise and it has really come in handy at times. Thanks for the info and suggestions.

I own and use the Defiance action wrench for my two Defiance actions, as well as a Zapp wrench (Gradous) which is the same style. They work well - no compliants.

The surgeon style would work okay as well, my only potential source of concern with the Surgeon, is that it would be easier for a wrench to slip, causing frustration and potential aesthetic damage (no structural damage). The Defiance style gives you a bit more "purchase" on the action.

Not sure what to think of the last option you posted - too many parts and potential for fuck ups IMO.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for the input. I got a chance to call Jon Beanland today and he pretty much mirror’d what you said. They all work but he prefers the Defiance style rod. I’m just gonna go with that one.
